*All lectures are conducted during office hours Monday to Friday (8.00 am – 5.00 pm)
PROGRAM SUMMARY
The PhD program is a research and thesis mode. Candidates must complete at least 8 credits (units) course, writing a thesis, and defend research results (viva voce) for graduation. In addition, the candidates are required to present their research proposal and research results at the end of the study (oral examination). The presentation will be evaluated by the supervisor and a member of the Graduate Committee. For additional requirements, candidates must publish two (2) articles in journals (accepted for publication) and extend the findings orally at least in the related conference prior to graduation (subject to change). Candidates are also eligible to participate in internship programs abroad through the MOU signed by the IIR4.0. Candidates can also follow mobility programs offered by the University such as attending conferences, short courses, or workshops abroad.
LIFE AT THE FACULTY
The research’s carried out in IIR4.0 cover the latest emerging technologies that are the cornerstone of IR4.0 such as Artificial Intelligence, Internet of Things, Cloud Computing, Virtual Reality & Augmented Reality, Autonomous Systems, System Integration, Additives Manufacturing, Big Data Analytics, Robotics, and Cyber Security. The Institute is privileged to have a credible International Advisory Board comprising of high profile individuals from academia and industry both nationally and internationally that represent countries from United Kingdom (UK), Europe, Taiwan, and Malaysia. IIR4.0 has 15 Principal Research Fellows and more than 50 Associate Fellows from different disciplines including Engineering, Computer science, Medical, Social science and Economy. The Fellows and Associate Fellows of the Institute are experienced researchers (100% PhD holders) who are all passionate and dedicated to their respective fields of research with a wide industrial collaborations experience.
A person who wishes to apply for admission to the Doctorate programme shall possess the following qualification:
1. Masters Degree from the University or any higher learning institution recognised by the Senate; or
2. Other qualifications equivalent to a Master’s Degree or having other qualifications with experience recognised by the Senate; or
3. A candidate who is currently attending a full time a Master programme under paragraph 6(1) (a) in the University and is certified by the Faculty Graduate Studies Committee/Centre for Graduate Management to convert his/her status to a Doctorate programme with the approval of Dean of the Faculty/Director of the Institute; or
4. Bachelor’s Degree with excellent results from the University or any higher learning institution recognised by the Senate; or
5. Other qualifications recognised by the Senate obtained through Accreditation of Prior Experiential Learning (APEL) or through Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL); and
6. Fulfills other requirements prescribed by the programme (where applicable).

ENGLISH LANGUAGE PROFICIENCY REQUIREMENTS
1. An international candidate is required to fulfill the English Language proficiency requirements as follows:
a) Obtained TOEFL (550), IELTS(6) or MUET (4) results which fulfil the score or minimum band requirements prescribed by the programme; or
b) For certain programmes, a candidate is required to sit for an English Proficiency Test (EPT) and if he/she fails to achieve the level specified by the programme, the candidate is required to attend and pass the English Proficiency Module (EPM) in a maximum period of two (2) semesters before he is allowed to register for the study programme. The candidate shall register as a Non Graduating Student.
2. The Faculty/Institute may grant exemption to the requirements specified in subregulation (1) for the international candidate who:
a) will be writing his/her thesis/dissertation in the Malay/ Arabic languages;
b) has the academic qualifications obtained from any local universities recognised by the Senate; or
c) is originally from a country where English is the official language or he/she has the academic qualifications obtained from any higher learning institution which uses English as the medium of instruction.
The candidate may be exempted from the requirements stated in subregulation (2), but the candidate shall sit for the English Proficiency Test (EPT) and if he/she fails to obtain the level specified by the programme, the candidate is required to attend and pass the English Proficiency Module (EPM).
