Lecture 1: Critical Literature Review Using Socratic Questioning Method
This seminar is designed to introduce the process of planning, researching, and drafting a literature review. As part of this focus, this workshop will address how to read sources critically and writing reviews that place these sources in the context of their field. Other important components in this seminar include enhancing literature search skills, mapping and analyzing ideas and critical evaluation of literature. Researchers must learn a range of skills to effectively marshal and organize their research as soon as possible. One of the skills which is vital in analyzing secondary literature is the technique of questioning. As such, we must look for research and writing strategies for managing this material. By breaking this process down into six steps and incorporating Socratic method of questioning, we can begin to unpack some important aspects of secondary literature review and analysis. This seminar is designed to help participants do so.
Lecture 2: How to Formulate the Research Problem Statement
Researchers seems to be confused as to what comprise a problem statement while research methods textbooks have not clarified the matter well. If one wants to solve a problem one must definitely know what the problem is and the weakness of much of our research is that we have failed to take seriously the initial step in research design, that is, formulating the problem. Very often researcher tend to concentrate on precision in methodology and neglect the problem formulation. This seminar is a knowledge sharing session that highlights the importance in understanding the characteristics of the research problem as it is the heart of the research process; and attempts to offer guidelines for formulating and writing the problem statement.
