PROGRAM SUMMARY

The Masters programme in FSSK is divided into two modes of study, Masters by coursework and Masters by research. The coursework mode offers three types of Masters degrees, Master of Arts, Master of Social Sciences and Master in Environmental Management, while the research programme is called Master of Philosophy.

In total, there are 23 Masters by coursework programmes at the faculty that cover a wide range of disciplines. Of these, five are joint Masters programmes offered in collaboration with Government agencies. For the research Masters, 17 Master of Philosophy Programmes are offered in the six research centres at the faculty. Supervision for the Masters thesis is provided by lecturers with a wide range of expertise in the disciplines of social sciences and humanities.

FSSK is located on the UKM campus in Bangi, Selangor, 35 km south of Kuala Lumpur. FSSK is a centre of excellence that fosters the kind of critical thinking and creativity that builds leaders.

FSSK is committed to equipping students with the most effective ways of learning. We start from the belief that as every student is an individual, learning is a personal journey rather than a standardised, linear progression. We therefore assist student to discover their own learning style, to understand and build their motivation, and to acquire effective study skills that will retain their value throughout their lives.

Programme Requirement
A person who intends to apply for a master’s programme should have the following Qualifications:

  1. Bachelor’s Degree by obtaining a good Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) from a University or any institution of higher learning recognized by the Malaysian Qualifications Agency (MQA) and/ or having accreditation recognized by a foreign Accreditation Body, or institution who has accreditation as prescribed by a programme;
  2. Doctor of Medicine degree or Doctor of Dental Surgery degree from the University or any institution of higher learning or an equivalent degree from any institutions of higher learning recognised by the Senate;
  3. Any other qualification recognised by the Senate obtained through the Accreditation of Prior Experiential Learning (APEL);
  4. Fulfils other requirements prescribed by the programme (if applicable) and
  5. Fulfils requirements of the Malaysian Qualifications Agency (MQA)

ENGLISH LANGUAGE PROFICIENCY REQUIREMENTS

1. An international candidate is required to fulfill the English Language proficiency requirements as follows:

a. Obtained TOEFL (550), IELTS(6) or MUET (4) results which fulfil the score or minimum band requirements prescribed by the programme; or

b. For certain programmes, a candidate is required to sit for an English Proficiency Test (EPT) and if he/she fails to achieve the level specified by the programme, the candidate is required to attend and pass the English Proficiency Module (EPM) in a maximum period of two (2) semesters before he is allowed to register for the study programme. The candidate shall register as a Non Graduating Student.

2. The Faculty/Institute may grant exemption to the requirements specified in subregulation (1) for the international candidate who:

a. will be writing his/her thesis/dissertation in the Malay/ Arabic languages;

b. has the academic qualifications obtained from any local universities recognised by the Senate; or

c. is originally from a country where English is the official language or he/she has the academic qualifications obtained from any higher learning institution which uses English as the medium of instruction.

The candidate may be exempted from the requirements stated in subregulation (2), but the candidate shall sit for the English Proficiency Test (EPT) and if he/she fails to obtain the level specified by the programme, the candidate is required to attend and pass the English Proficiency Module (EPM).

How To Apply

  2. Intake for coursework and mixed mode are open twice a year, which is every October until November (for the next February intake) and every April until May (for the September intake).
  3. Application for research mode programmes can be made any time throughout the year.
  4. The duration for Masters programme requires 2 to 4 semester of study on fulltime basis and 4 to 8 semesters on a parttime basis and for Doctor of Philosophy programme is 6 to 12 semesters on fulltime basis and 8 to 14 semesters on a part-time basis.
