Dr. Abdul Latiff Library

Dr. Abdul Latiff Library UKM was established in 1974 with the intention to provide support in the process of teaching, learning and researching for the Faculty of Medicine, Faculty of Allied Health Sciences, Faculty of Dentistry and Faculty of Pharmacy. The library was known as the Medical Library and then on 25th November 2005 it was officially named Dr. Abdul Latiff Library. The three storey library consists of a building of 3,716 square meters and equipped with 400 reading places.

Health Sciences

Collections

General Collection

This open access collection comprises text books in Medicine, Health Sciences and Dentistry, besides books in general fields such as religion, information technology and others. The materials in this collection can be borrowed by library members based on their respective category qualifications.

Reference Collection

All materials in this collection have the ‘Ruj’ code prefixed to their call numbers. This section  is located at Level 3, Dr. Abdul Latiff Library. The reference collection comprises reference books such as encyclopedias, dictionaries, almanacs, guide books, yearbooks, etc. These materials are NOT ALLOWED for borrowing and are strictly for reference within the library only.

Red Spot Collection

This collection section is located behind the Borrowing and Returning Counter at Level 2, Dr. Abdul Latiff Library. The titles are mainly recommended by lecturers which serve as compulsory reading materials. This collection can be borrowed by students for 2 hours only or overnight. Academicians are allowed to borrow this collection for a week. 

Thesis & Academic Collection

All materials in this collection have the code ‘Tesis’ for thesis  materials and ‘Ilmiah’ for academic training  materials prefixed to their call numbers. It is located at Level 2 behind Dr. Abdul Latiff Library service counter. These materials are NOT ALLOWED for borrowing and are strictly for reference only within the library.

Light Reading Collection

This collection is situated at Level 2, Dr. Abdul Latiff Library. The collection comprises light reading materials, general and popular in nature, and are suitable for all users. Reading and browsing are restricted to the corner provided. However, borrowing procedures for materials from this collection are similar to that of the General Collection.

Journal Collection

This collection consists of 2 categories, namely current journals and back issue journals. Both types of journals are placed at Level 1, Dr. Abdul Latiff Library. These materials CANNOT BE BORROWED and are only for reference in the library. Popular journals are placed at Light Reading Collection, Level 2, Dr. Abdul Latiff Library.

Special, Archive & Document Collection

This collection consists of document materials published by the government of Malaysia and its agencies, local governments, statutory bodies and foreign publications. This collection also places materials about history and UKM progress, including the works of academicians and students such as seminar, thesis and project papers.  This collection CANNOT BE BORROWED and are for reference in the library only.

e-Book Collection

These collections consist of e-book subscribed by UKM Library

Services

Online Renewal can be done through GEMILANG before due date. Renewal is only allowed for a maximum of 3 times, no outstanding fine and the material has not been booked by other user.

FINES FOR OVERDUE MATERIALS

Overdue books are subjected to fines at the following rates:

General Collections                   RM0.30 per book per day
Red Spot Collection                   RM 3.00 per book per day
Fines do not include holidays

FINES FOR LOSS OF MATERIALS 

Users are subjected to the following procedures:

  • Replace the book with the same or newer edition plus RM100.00 processing fee OR replace the book with the same subject plus RM100.00 processing fee OR pay the current price of the book plus RM100.00 processing fee
  • Overdue fines (if any)

GEMILANG is the name given to the library’s online catalogue, updated daily and accessible via the Internet. The functions are for searching, reservation, patron record and online renewal. Bibliographic information of the library’s materials can be accessed by key-word search of author, editor, title, subject and call number. Web-based GEMILANG is accessed via a web gateway at the following URL: http://gemilang.ukm.my.

  • This service is extended to all academic / professional / administrative staff, postgraduates and final year students of the University. Undergraduate students of the University may be considered for the service if the required items are available only in libraries where they are denied library membership.
  • Applicants are required to completing the Inter Library Loan Form / or fill in  the online http://iquest.net.my/iquest/
  • Applicants will be charged the cost of materials supplied and services fees
  • Materials in the country are FREE but foreign materials will be charged.

The Information Skills Course is a guidance and education service programme for library customers. The main aim of this course is to build skills in accessing a variety of materials and information sources and to guide the customers towards using the materials and services provided by the Library with efficiency, effectively and independently. This course is on-going.

Objectives:

To expose customers to how they can use the services, facilities and collections to be found in the Library.

To understand efficient and effective methods and strategies for finding information.

To enable customers to identify and access information from a variety of printed and electronic sources.

To build self-confidence in the search for knowledge and information for learning, teaching and research.

To build skills in making library comments/library research in the discipline under study.

To build skills in making citations for every reference made.

To build a culture of life-long education.
