The Malay World & Civilization Library

The Malay World and Civilization Library (ATMA Library) was established in 1972 and the purpose of its establishment is to support the studies and administration of Institute of The Malay World and Civilization (ATMA). The idea of its establishment was inspired from ‘Documentation and Research Program’ that was drafted by the first former Director of ATMA, Professor Dr. Syed Muhammad Naquib al-Attas. ATMA Library has taken the action by developing and enriching the library collection in the study area of The Malay World and Civilization from time to time. ATMA Library formerly had 30,000 copies of material collection and the collection has currently increased to at least 85,000 copies including  materials purchased from local and foreign countries. The ATMA Library has several material collections, namely General Collection, Reference Collection, Serial Collection, Special Collection, Malay Language collection, Collection of N.A.Halim, Collection of Wiramanja, Collection of Saad Shukri, and Sundanese Collection. The ATMA Library is currently located at Level 2 and Level 3, ATMA Building, UKM.

Collections

General Collection

This collection can be consulted and loaned out by the customers with loan eligibility based on their respective categories. This collection of books IS related to language, literature, history, culture, science and technology and the world of Malay Archipelago. Our research thrust to support a greater scope, diversity of subject matter is also widely based on the needs of research on the comparative study is not limited to only the Malay world.

Reference Collection

Reference collection cannot be loaned out and can only be consulted in the library. This collection includes the materials nature and Malay civilization consisting of atlases, dictionaries, encyclopedias, directories, bibliographies, indexes, abstracts and guidebooks.

Serials Collection

This collection has a prefix ‘8 series’ on call numbers that put the journals, periodicals and serials materials either in or outside the country of issues.

Theses and Undergraduate Students Exercises Collection.

This collection of university theses put in and outside the country on a number of related fields as well as scientific training of undergraduate students in Malay literature from the Department of Malay Literature, UKM.

Special Collection

Is a collection of all of the Malay Archipelago and the Malay-Polynesian world including Sri Lanka, South Africa, Surinam Collection on Malay language, English language book titles, as well as those rare in Dutch (language-related information and the Malay community in the 16th century).

Newspaper Cuttings

The library also holds a collection of newspaper cuttings of Malay studies of Berita Harian and Utusan Malaysia from 1986 to 1999.

N.A. Halim Collection

A unique collection of recordings that capture the adventures of humanists and historians from Mr. Halim Nasir (N.A. Halim) who is also a consultant and guest writer for over three decades in the field of photography, architecture, and painting at ATMA. Collection decades symbolizing his love of science and heritage of the Malays made up of materials such as books (journals, papers, magazines, reports, books, souvenirs) photos, slides, plans, and maps. The strengths of this collection are the various aspects of Malay architecture such as houses, mosques, tombs, cities, and rivers. It is also a symbol of concern and acknowledgment by N.A. Halim to the Malay culture in which makes this collection special.

Sundanese Literature Collection

Collection of books dime novel in the Sundanese language published in 1969-1975 which is described as the largest collection of materials in the Sundanese language outside the Sundanese land. The books in this collection have been registered in the Malay’s Catalogue Collection (compiled by the ATMA Library) with other Indonesian’s works.

Wiramanja Collection

Wiramanja is the nickname of Mr. Abdul Rahman bin Ahmad Hanafi who contributed his collection to the Library of ATMA. This collection consists of a stack of scripts of Tan Sri P. Ramlee in which he had received recognition and awards from The Malaysia Book of Records as the extraordinary task of investigating and transcription to Tan Sri P. Ramlee’s 40 films. Besides, this collection consists of a compact disc (Malay songs and some abroad songs), periodicals, theses, and books containing his papers in the form of an anthology of poetry and drama which was partly published by RTM.

Saad Shukri Collection

Is a collection of works of the late Saad Shukri Haji Muda, who was a member of the political, cultural, and employees, which was active in Kelantan in the 1930s to 1960s. This collection consists of dictionaries and encyclopaedias in the fields of politics, culture, and language that are still in the form of typescript.

Malay Language Collection

This collection of materials related to the field of research puts the Malay language. Consists of various categories of materials such as books, theses, journals, seminars, pamphlets, and reference materials. This collection is a limited collection that can only be referred and has the prefix “8 kbm” on the call number.

Collections of Personal Contributions

The ATMA Library has a collection of personal contributions from several academics and university administrators. Among the collection of donations are from Wan Hashim Wan Teh (whwt), Syukri Yeoh Abdullah (syuk), Teo Kok Seong (teo), and Tuan Haji Abd Razak Hussin (arash). Each collection includes various branches of natural science and Malay civilization.

FINES FOR OVERDUE MATERIALS

Overdue books are subjected to fines at the following rates:

General Collections                   RM0.30 per book per day
Red Spot Collection                   RM 3.00 per book per day
Fines do not include holidays

FINES FOR LOSS OF MATERIALS 

Users are subjected to the following procedures:

  • Replace the book with the same or newer edition plus processing fee of RM100.00 OR replace the book with the same subject plus  processing fee of RM100.00 OR pay the current price of the book plus  processing fee of RM100.00 
  • Overdue fines (if any)

Online Renewal

Online Renewal can be done through GEMILANG before due date, renewal is only allowed for a maximum of 3 times, with  no outstanding fine and the material has not been booked by other users.

GEMILANG is the name given to the Library’s Online Catalogue, updated daily and accessible via the Internet. The functions are for searching, reservation, patron recording  and online renewal. Bibliographic information of the library’s materials can be accessed by author, editor, title, subject and call number. Web-based GEMILANG is accessed via web gateway at the following URL: http://gemilang.ukm.my.

Document Delivery

This service is extended to all academic, professionals,  administrative staff, postgraduates and final year students of the University. Undergraduate students of the University may be considered for the service if the required items are available only in libraries where they are denied library membership.

Applicants are required to complete the Inter Library Loan Form / or fill in the online http://iquest.net.my/iquest/

Applicants will be charged the cost of materials supplied and services fees

Materials in the country are FREE but foreign materials will be charged.

SERVICE CHARGE:

Free for articles and books from local libraries.

Item from British Library.

New books will be placed on display for duration of 2 weeks at display new books corner, Level 3, ATMA Library. Users are allowed to borrow the books.
