CLINICAL FELLOWSHIP IN CHILD AND ADOLESCENT PSYCHIATRY

  1. A registered basic medical degree recognised by the Malaysian Medical Council (MMC).
  2. A recognized qualification in General Psychiatry [Master of Psychological Medicine, Master of Medicine (Psychiatry), MRCPsych or equivalent].
  3. Be gazetted or is eligible for gazettement as a psychiatrist.
  4. Supervised experience (in General Psychiatry) post-gazettement of at least 1 year.
  5. Registered as specialist with National Specialist Register of Malaysia.
  6. Satisfactory reports from two (2) referees pertaining to suitability of candidate in terms of interest, experience and attitude.

To produce child and adolescent psychiatrist with competencies in the areas of mental health and  mental health disorders of  children,  adolescents and their families.

The objective of this programme is to provide comprehensive training to suitable candidates in the subspecialty of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry. It aims to produce competent Child and Adolescent Psychiatrists who are:

i. Able to conduct comprehensive assessment, formulation and management of children and adolescents with mental health disorders, as well as their families

ii. Able to advocate for promotion of  mental health and prevention of  mental  health disorders among children and adolescents

iii. Able to conduct research within the scope of child and adolescent mental health and mental health disorders

iv. Able to conduct training in children  and adolescent mental health

Year 1:

Focus:  Child and adolescent psychiatry

Training Centre: Child and Adolescent Psychiatry Unit, HCTM UKM and  HPKK

Year 2:

Focus:  Paediatric liaison and subspecialty, and  child and adolescent psychiatry

Training Centres:

i.   Child Development Centre, HPKK (3 months)

ii.  Paediatric subspecialty (3 months)

iii. Child and Adolescent Psychiatry Unit, HCTM UKM

Year 3:

Focus: Child and adolescent psychiatry  and elective posting

Training Centre: Child and Adolescent Psychiatry Unit, HCTM UKM and HPKK

i. Candidates will be required to perform all clinical activities at the level of a specialist i.e. to treat patients in the child psychiatry clinic and ward, do ‘day calls’, treat emergency cases and referral cases.

ii. Candidate is required to join all clinical and academic activities of the unit ie. intake meeting, psychological assessment, SCAN meeting, case conference, journal club, tutorial etc.

iii. Candidates is required to attend and assist in paediatric subspecialty clinics during attachment

iv. Exposure to various governmental, non-governmental agencies and other  community-based therapy services including early intervention programme, specific integrated program, and rehabilitation centre for children and adolescents

v. Involves in school, home and court visits.

vi. Candidate is required to complete a research project  and encouraged to publish at least 1 manuscript in a WOS journal

 vii.     Candidate must be contactable and regularly meet with course director.

Assessment:

Assessment will be based on:

i.  logbook

ii. continuous assessment and feedback

iii. completion of research  project

Exit certification: Certificate of completion of training certified by Course Director and Dean, Faculty of Medicine UKM will be given to all successful candidates.

DEFINITION

Credentialing: a process to set the standards and to do an evaluation for a person’s qualification in a field or procedure. It is recognition for the professional training done by a medical practitioner.

Privileges: the rights given by the hospital for a medical practitioner to give treatments or to do procedures on hospital patients based on the qualifications of the training, and the medical practitioner’s experience and expertise.
