Clinical Fellowship

CLINICAL FELLOWSHIP IN BREAST SURGICAL

Course Director: Prof. Dr. Norlia Abdullah

The objective of the programme:

This fellowship programme is aimed to provide an opportunity for the trainee to gain exposure and experience in managing simple and complex breast diseases. The duration will vary from 6 months to one year.

Areas of expertise :

The trainee will be exposed to various benign and malignant breast diseases. This will include procedures performed in the Clinic which are:  Aspiration of Cysts/Abscess/Seroma, Assessment of Lymphoedema, Breast and Axillary Ultrasound,  Clinical and Ultrasound guided  Fine needle Aspiration Cytology and Core Needle Biopsy.

The trainee will be involved in standard and advanced breast surgeries such  as Breast Lump Excision, Breast Conserving Surgery, Mastectomy, Axillary dissection, Hookwire localization and excision , Sentinel Lymph node surgery,  Breast oncoplastic surgery and Breast Reconstructive Surgery (Pending on the availability of cases)

Criteria for eligibility in the programme:

The trainee must possess a Medical Degree which is recognized by the Malaysian Medical Council. He/She must be gazetted as a General Surgeon with a minimum of two years working in General Surgery.

The selection process:

Applications may be made by sending a Curriculum Vitae  (CV) to the Head of The Division of Breast Reconstructive Surgery.  Only the CV of the successful candidate(s) will be forwarded to the Human Resource Department for further processing.

Description of the tasks to be carried out:

The trainee will be involved in all aspects of clinical management and research. This will be running clinics , operating theatres, ward rounds and on calls. He/She will also be involved in conducting research, writing articles in journals and case presentation in meetings and conferences.

Training sessions:

Day/Time 8.00 am – 1.00 pm , 2.00 – 5.00 pm. There are times when the trainee will be involved beyond the above hours depending on the cases/requirement in the wards,  clinics and operating theatres.

The trainee will be involved in breast cases in the 2 divisions of the Breast & Endocrine Surgical Unit; which are:

a. Breast Reconstructive Surgery (BRS)

b. Endocrine & Breast Surgery (E&B)

Monday

E&B – Pre-operative Round

BRS Clinic (2-5pm) – New cases, Pre-operative Round

Tuesday

Operating Theatres (9-5pm)– E&B (Week 1,3,5) & BRS (Week 2 & 4)

Pre-operative Round

Wednesday

Operating Theatres (9-5pm)- E&B (Week 2) & BRS (Week 4)

Multi-Disciplinary Team Case Discussion (12.30-1.45pm) – (Week 1 & 3)

Tutorial- Week 1 & 3,  4-5pm or 5-6pm (The time may change as required)

Thursday

ENB Clinic (9-1pm), BRS(2-5pm)- Follow-up cases

Friday

ENB Clinic (9-12.15pm)

PM: Research & Self directed learning

Method of assessment/Certificate Awarded :

At the end of the attachment, there will an assessment conducted by the

committee. A certificate will be awarded upon satisfactory completion of the placement.

Emolument : There will be no emolument given but the trainee will have to pay a fee as imposed by the university.

  • Fill in and submit Application Form to International Affairs Unit (UPA)
  • Letter of Temporary Approval/ Letter of Rejection to applicants will be issued by SPS
  • For the accepted candidates, a copy of the Temporary Approval Letter will be sent to UKM Shape – for VISA’s application process

  • *Since Covid-19 pandemic, Malaysian Immigration will only issued Professional Visit Pass (PVP) with Single Entry Visa for 1 Year. Candidate must go out from Malaysia before PVP expired and must re-apply new PVP from home country for next year's programme
    *All documents will be sent through the International Affairs Unit, Faculty of Medicine UKM

Candidate enrolled and report to the Course Director

An offer letter will be issued (by UKM Shape) to the candidate for the payment process

Course Director will notify the candidate about privileging and credentialing to HCTM Credentialing Link

ONE (1) month before programme ends, the Course Director are required to inform SPS and International Affairs Unit, Faculty of Medicine UKM
Finish
SPS will issue Certificate of Completion to the candidate

DEFINITION

Credentialing: a process to set the standards and to do an evaluation for a person’s qualification in a field or procedure. It is recognition for the professional training done by a medical practitioner.

Privileges: the rights given by the hospital for a medical practitioner to give treatments or to do procedures on hospital patients based on the qualifications of the training, and the medical practitioner’s experience and expertise.

Select Head of Department (HOD) to verify your application.

Tick (√) and submit your application.

Your Dashboard for the application status will appear. You can check the ongoing status by time to time.
Step 7
All applications will be reviewed in a meeting.

*The meeting will be conducted 4 times a year

HCTM issue an Approval Letter (TWO weeks after the meeting)
