Oculoplastic, Orbit and Lacrimal Surgery (OOLS)

Applicants must fulfil the following requirements:

  • Completion of recognised specialist training in Ophthalmology
  • At least one year of post-specialist qualification experience
  • Ability to perform clinical duties independently with minimal supervision

Fees should be paid to UKM and settled with no outstanding amounts due

At the completion of the fellowship, the fellow should be able to:

  • Demonstrate comprehensive knowledge and surgical skills in oculoplastic, orbital and lacrimal surgery
  • Provide high-quality clinical care while maintaining professional and ethical standards
  • Work effectively within a multidisciplinary healthcare team
  • Exercise sound clinical judgement, decision-making and emergency management skills
  • Perform oculoplastic surgical procedures safely and competently
  • Demonstrate effective communication, teamwork and professional responsibility
  • Apply principles of clinical research and critical appraisal of scientific literature
  • Contribute to teaching and training activities within the department
  • Conduct supervised clinical research and scholarly activities
  • Practise with increasing clinical independence while recognising the need for supervision when appropriate

The Oculoplastic Fellow will participate in clinical services, surgical training, academic activities, teaching and research within the Department of Ophthalmology. Training will be conducted under the supervision of consultant oculoplastic surgeons with progressive development of independent clinical and surgical skills.

 

1. Clinical Responsibilities

The fellow will:

  • Participate as a member of the multidisciplinary team managing oculoplastic, orbital and lacrimal disorders
  • Assist in the management of ophthalmology inpatients, including clinical assessment, documentation and treatment planning
  • Attend Oculoplastic Outpatient Clinics, assessing new and follow-up patients under consultant supervision

Note:
More than 50% of the fellowship training is conducted in the outpatient setting, providing extensive exposure to clinical decision-making in oculoplastic practice.

The fellow will also:

  • Manage patients referred to ophthalmic emergency services
  • Assess and manage ophthalmic emergencies, particularly oculoplastic and periocular conditions
  • Coordinate referrals from emergency departments and other specialties
  • Maintain clinical competency in general ophthalmology while focusing on the oculoplastic subspecialty
  • Ensure accurate and comprehensive clinical documentation

 

2. Surgical Training

The fellow will:

  • Attend operating theatre sessions under consultant supervision
  • Perform surgical procedures with graded responsibility based on competency and experience
  • Gain exposure to a wide range of procedures including:
  • Eyelid surgery (ptosis repair, entropion, ectropion, eyelid reconstruction)
  • Periocular tumour surgery
  • Lacrimal surgery (e.g., dacryocystorhinostomy)
  • Orbital procedures
  • Management of oculoplastic trauma

The fellow will also:

  • Participate in perioperative patient care, including preoperative assessment and postoperative follow-up

Maintain a surgical logbook and operative documentation

 

3. Emergency Duties

The fellow will:

  • Participate in ophthalmic emergency services, particularly those related to oculoplastic conditions
  • Assist in the assessment and management of acute ophthalmic presentations
  • Provide appropriate clinical handover to incoming teams

 

4. Academic Activities

The fellow is expected to actively participate in departmental academic activities including:

  • Clinical meetings and departmental conferences
  • Grand Ward Rounds
  • Ophthalmology teaching sessions and journal clubs
  • Hospital-wide medical and surgical grand rounds
  • Case presentations and clinical audit discussions

 

5. Teaching Responsibilities

The fellow will contribute to the department’s educational activities by:

  • Teaching and supervising ophthalmology residents, registrars and medical students
  • Providing clinical teaching in clinics, wards and operating theatres
  • Participating in the postgraduate teaching programme

 

6. Research Activities

The fellow will:

  • Participate in clinical and laboratory-based research activities
  • Conduct research projects under consultant supervision
  • Contribute to publications, conference presentations and clinical audits
  • Participate in research clinics and multi-centre clinical trials when available
  • Develop skills in critical appraisal of scientific literature

 

Certification

Upon successful completion of the programme, a Certificate of Completion of Training endorsed by the Course Director and the Dean, Faculty of Medicine, Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia will be awarded. 

 

Assessment and Monitoring

Fellows’ progress will be monitored through regular performance evaluations by a designated supervisor, which will assess:

  • Clinical knowledge
  • Clinical judgement and decision-making
  • Emergency and procedural skills
  • Communication and teamwork
  • Professional conduct and responsibility

DEFINITION

Credentialing: a process to set the standards and to do an evaluation for a person’s qualification in a field or procedure. It is recognition for the professional training done by a medical practitioner.

Privileges: the rights given by the hospital for a medical practitioner to give treatments or to do procedures on hospital patients based on the qualifications of the training, and the medical practitioner’s experience and expertise.
