UMBI Genome Sequencing Centre: Promoting Research in Genomics Medicine

Last week two new sequencing systems arrived at UMBI’s doorstep, the HiSeq 3000 and the MiSeq systems. The arrival of the two systems means UMBI is now one of the well-equipped genome sequencing centres in Malaysia. UMBI already has the Ion Proton and the Ion Torrent systems in our core facility for genome sequencing. These next generation sequencing systems allow more rapid sequencing runs with better coverage and accuracy. The HiSeq 3000 is the first unit installed in Malaysia and has the capability to sequence 6 whole genomes in 3.5 days. UMBI is already embarking on whole exome sequencing projects for cancers and also hypercholesterolemia and is planning on large scale whole genome sequencing projects soon. We welcome collaborators from other institutions to work with us for future project and also funding proposals.
