Briefing on Commercialization Strategy

On 5 May 2025, UMBI organized a briefing on commercialization strategy for its Research Fellows at the Seminar Lounge, Level 8 of its building. The session was delivered by Encik Mohamad Mustaqim Rosli, Executive of Innovation and Head of the Commercialization Unit at the Centre for Innovation & Technology Transfer, UKM (INOVASI@UKM).

This program was aimed at increasing awareness and understanding among UMBI researchers of the commercialization potential of research outcomes and the strategic steps required for successful market translation. Although UMBI’s research achievements are commendable, challenges remain in identifying which results are commercially viable and in navigating the available support structures at UKM. This session was designed to address these gaps.

Encik Mustaqim delivered a comprehensive and informative presentation, guiding participants through key topics such as the fundamental requirements for commercialization, particularly the development of minimum viable products (MVPs). He explained the processes and routes to commercialization, which typically begin with ideation, followed by proof-of-concept, intellectual property (IP) protection, validation, and ultimately, product launch.

The briefing also introduced the various units within INOVASI@UKM that offer support throughout the entire commercialization process. In addition, common challenges faced by researchers, such as determining market needs and securing funding, were discussed alongside practical solutions. Several success stories involving commercialized products developed at UKM were also shared to inspire and motivate participants.

The program concluded with a lively and engaging Q&A session, during which participants actively sought clarification and shared their thoughts. The interaction reflected the relevance and importance of the subject matter to the research community.

It is hoped that the program will encourage more researchers to explore commercialization opportunities and contribute to translating research into impactful products and services. UMBI extends its appreciation to Encik Mustaqim and all attendees for their active participation and looks forward to continued efforts to strengthen commercialization initiatives within the university.
