DR. NURUL SYAKIMA AWARDED THE RUTHERFORD STRATEGIC LINK SHORT TERM GRANT FELLOWSHIP

Dr. Nurul Syakima Ab Mutalib from the Cancer Genomics and Biobank team at UMBI has been awarded the prestigious Rutherford Strategic Link Short Term Grant Fellowship. The grant will enable her to attend a 3-month attachment with the Newcastle University, Newcastle-upon-Tyne, England. Only 5 Malaysians were awarded with this fellowship. The recipient of this fellowship will receive a total of 14,800 GBP (RM78,599.27) to cover research materials, monthly allowances, accommodation and return flight tickets.

For this fellowship, Dr. Nurul Syakima will be involved in single cell RNA sequencing research on cancer at the Northern Institute for Cancer Research with Dr. Daniel Williamson as the mentor. In addition, she will also be trained in latest technology for microsatellite instability detection at the Institute of Genetic Medicine for which she will be mentored by Dr. Michael Jackson. The fellowship duration is from late December 2018 to early April 2019. UMBI wishes Dr. Syakima good luck and all the best during her stint in the UK.
