Next-Gen AIH Therapy: Whole-Cell MSCs vs. Cell-Free Extracellular Vesicles
UMBI is pleased to highlight a review article examining potential of mesenchymal stem/stromal cells (MSCs) and their extracellular vesicles (EVs) as emerging therapeutic approaches for autoimmune hepatitis (AIH). This chronic liver condition involves persistent inflammation driven by an abnormal immune response, while conventional treatments can carry significant long-term risks.
The review explores how MSCs and MSC-derived EVs may help regulate immune responses, reduce liver inflammation and support liver tissue repair. It also discusses emerging strategies, including genetic modification of MSCs and the use of EVs as targeted delivery vehicles for therapeutic molecules.
Although these approaches show promise, further research is needed to address challenges in treatment standardisation, efficacy and long-term safety before wider clinical application.
