World Autism Awareness Day 2025

2 April 2025 | World Autism Awareness Day

🌏 What are we celebrating?
World AUTISM Awareness Day promotes the understanding, acceptance, support, and inclusion of individuals with autism.

âť“ What is AUTISM?
AUTISM is described as neuro-developmental differences, in which an autistic person’s brain processes information in different ways than that of non-autistic individuals. These differences manifest in various behaviors, interactions, and social and communication skills. Thus, no two individuals with AUTISM are precisely alike. Some autistic individuals might need substantial support in their daily activities, while others might be independent and excel in their fields.

🔎 What causes AUTISM?

Studies tell us that the exact causes of AUTISM are not entirely determined. Still, it is suggested that AUTISM develops from a combination of genetics and environmental influences such as older parental age, maternal conditions like obesity, diabetes or immune system disorders, birth complications and others.

📍 Is AUTISM prevalent in Malaysia?

In Malaysia, it is estimated that AUTISM affects 1 in 108 children, with boys being 4 times more likely to have AUTISM than girls. Also, AUTISM often runs in families, with siblings having a 20% chance of having AUTISM if the older sister or brother has it.

At UMBI, we are committed to AUTISM research to understand AUTISM and drive impactful changes. With our collaborators from the Hospital Chancellor Tuanku Mukhriz (HCTM) and Hospital Tunku Ampuan Besar Tuanku Aishah Rohani (HPKK), we hope to help create a society that works for autistic people.

Here are some of what we are doing:

âś… Understanding AUTISM from the perspective of gut microbiomes (a sub-project under MySero-Biome)

âś… Identification of key molecular biomarkers in AUTISM (View article)

We extend our heartfelt gratitude to all our participants, the brave AUTISM children, and their caregivers, as well as our dedicated team and staff for their commitment.
