Ringkasan

This book is a compilation of papers presented at the international colloquium on Libraries and the Construction of Knowledge about the Malay World jointly organised by the Institute of the Malay World and Civilisation (ATMA) and Institute of Occidental Studies, Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM) on August 2 and 3, 2004 at UKM, Malaysia. The colloquium, with its central theme of “the development of and role of library collections related to the Malay World as well as the descriptions of the breadth and characteristics of the contemporary collections” was not only to explore the early history of European studies about the Malay World but also to obtain first-hand information about current interest and building of library collections in the Malay World itself. The twelve papers were presented by librarians and scholars not only from Malaysia and Indonesia but also those representing institutions well-known for their collections on the Malay World in Europe, the United States and Australia. These institutions including the School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS), London, the KITLV, Leiden and the Library of Congress, Washington, D.C. reveal fascinating insights into their collections’ history and gems in their libraries’ resources. From the Malay heartland itself, the National Libraries of Malaysia and Indonesia, The National Archives and the Malay Documentation Centre, Dewan Bahasa dan Pustaka discuss issues in their respective collection building in the postindependent era and the role these libraries play in preserving and at the same time ensuring access to their countries’ rich cultural and intellectual heritage. To achieve this, Dato’ Zawiyah Baba, former Director-General of the National Library of Malaysia points out that “there must be willingness, determination and commitment from all parties concerned to pool resources about the Malay World.” This book is recommended for researchers, librarians, archivists, historians, lecturers, students and the general public who are interested in the Malay World and resources about the Malay World.
