MOA BETWEEN IPI UKM AND UNIVERSITY OF SHARJAH, UNITED ARAB EMIRATES (UAE)
On 17 April 2025, the Institute of Climate Change (IPI), Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM), took another significant step on the global stage by signing a Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) with the University of Sharjah, United Arab Emirates.
The collaborative project, entitled “An Evidence-based Policy Framework to Support Malaysia’s Energy Transition Through Life Cycle Assessment and Economic Analysis Nexus of the Fuel Cell Industry”, is led by Prof. Dr. Marlia Mohd Hanafiah and will be implemented over five years, from 17 April 2025 to 16 April 2030. The MOA was signed by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Zaini Sakawi, Director of IPI UKM, and witnessed by Prof. Dr. Marlia Mohd Hanafiah, Head of the Centre for Tropical Climate Change System.
Representing the University of Sharjah was Prof. Dr. Maamar Bettayeb, Vice Chancellor for Research and Graduate Studies. This strategic partnership aims to combine expertise in life cycle assessment, sustainability studies, climate change, and economic analysis to develop evidence-based policy frameworks supporting Malaysia’s energy transition.
Following the MOA signing, a knowledge-sharing workshop was held, during which Prof. Dr. Marlia Mohd Hanafiah delivered an invited lecture on Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) and Sustainability, highlighting the role of science-based evidence in policy-making for climate action. She was accompanied by her research team: Mr. Muhammad Yamin Sharohhuddin, who presented on Recycling Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) in Mitigating Climate Change, and Ms. Shereen Chong, who shared insights on Fuel Cell Electric Buses (FCEBs).
The MOA signing marks a milestone in strengthening IPI UKM’s international network and reaffirms its commitment to advancing climate change mitigation and sustainable energy solutions through research, collaboration, and innovation.
