Course Synopsis

This course aims to build knowledge of social science research methods in ethnic studies. Course content is structured to form a basic understanding of social science research, plan the implementation of studies and synthesize various types of research guided by quantitative and qualitative approaches. Research perspectives in positivist, interpretive, and critical lens, social science research concepts, types of social science research, concepts and applications of theory, critical literature review and ethics while conducting research are discussed in this course. This course also emphasizes on research planning based on the construction of study design strategies, measurement and sampling in quantitative and qualitative approaches and focuses on data collection and analysis strategies. Academic writing styles, resources and techniques for finding academic materials are also discussed to strengthen the mastery of research knowledge in the process of producing thesis and scholarly writing to meet the needs of the study program.

Course Learning Outcomes

At the end of the course, students in Masters programmeΒ should be able to:

  • Explain the principles, basic concepts, and application of social science research methods in the field of ethnic studies;
  • Apply the theory, literature, measurement, and sampling methods in ethnic studies research;
  • Select different types of studies and methods of data analysis in quantitative and qualitative approaches that coincide with the research focus of ethnic studies; and
  • Produce research proposals in the field of ethnic studies using appropriate research approaches and cultivate research ethics.

At the end of the course, students in PhD programme should be able to:

  • Explain the principles, basic concepts, and application of social science research methods in the field of ethnic studies;
  • Analyze the theory, literature, measurement, and sampling methods in ethnic studies research;
  • Recommend types of studies and methods of data analysis in quantitative and qualitative approaches that coincide with the research focus of ethnic studies; and
  • Produce research proposal papers that are novelty and contribute to the field of knowledge of ethnic studies by using appropriate research approaches as well as cultivating research ethics.
