UKM Global Webinar Series: Transdisciplinary Education and the Growth of Global Citizens

Transdisciplinary education includes teaching, learning and research efforts focused on problems that cross the boundaries of two or more disciplines. Transdisciplinary education is important especially during this challenging era where the global issues and problems are on the rise that require solutions to problems coming from various perspectives. The focus of this webinar will be on the sharing of insights and point of views of various distinct speakers addressing the need for transdisciplinary understanding to be incorporated into the education system. The Sustainable Development Goals for example cuts across various fields of studies and is applicable to all walks of life. Issues such as health, poverty, gender equality, biodiversity, environment, sustainable cities, indigenous communities etc. cuts across various angles of understanding. Transdisciplinary understanding needs to strongly be explored especially in the process of creating global citizens. This generation needs to understand issues that go beyond boundaries and how global cooperation is important in solving global issues. Ultimately, transdisciplinary education goes further by helping students grow and learn at a deeper level where students do not compartmentalize learning, but rather explore content within the context of inquiry, far beyond their comfort zone.

At the end of the webinar, participants will be able to :

⊷ Learn how transdisciplinary education contributes to the development of a global citizen.

Associate Professor Dr. Adelina Asmawi is Head, Department of Language and Literacy Education. She was the Deputy Dean of Undergraduate Studies and the Quality Manager at the Faculty of Education, University of Malaya from 2014 to 2017. She holds a PhD in Professional Development of Teachers, TESOL, and Instructional Technology from Melbourne Graduate School of Education, University of Melbourne, Australia.

Dr. Adelina has worked with University of Exeter and Chulalongkorn University on creative thinking and creative teaching for higher education. She is currently working on developing English language resources for select urban poor students and volunteers and an interdisciplinary one with Dentistry and Computer Science Faculties on an App to prevent smoking initiation among Malaysian children.

Her most recent books are 'The Art of Reflective Thinking' (2016), The Art of Creative Research (2017). Thesis Easy (2018) and From Me to We: Teaching Taboo Topics for Empathy through Spoken Word Poetry (in press). She writes for Leaderonomics and is Chief Editor of 'Language Education for a World on the Move' (2020).

Dr Adelina was awarded Best in Teaching at the 2017 University of Malaya Excellence Award and was double awarded: the GOLD Award and Special Award for Student Support for her research and product: Thesis Easy at the Liter Research Conference 2018. Dr Adelina represented University of Malaya for the prestigious 2018 National Academic Award, AAN12 (Teaching Category). She also received the Best Paper Award at the International Conference on Education (ICE) in Nov 2018. In Feb 2019, she won a Silver Medal at CITREX 2019 and in April 2019, 2 Platinum medals at the Innovation and Design Expo, UM for her PEARL framework (Pedagogy of English language Acquisition among uRban poor Learners) and REACH framework (Professional development of teachers through community engagement). She is VIWA 2019's Outstanding Woman in Humanities and Social Sciences. 2020 saw another Platinum medal on her belt from INSIDE2020 for her team's innovation 'MAID in Malaysia'. She is recipient of Melbourne Graduate School International Alumni Award 2020.

She is Founder of PEARL project, now extended to PEARL 2.0 (Lembah Subang), andPearl4PJ (Petaling jaya).

Professor Dr. Kenichi Namai, a professor of linguistics at Waseda University, earned a Ph.D. from the Department of Linguistics at Georgetown University in 1998. His specialties are linguistics and English language education. He has been teaching at Waseda since 1999. He has held visiting
professorships at Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis (2006), the National University
of Singapore (2017), and the National University of Malaysia (2017-2018). His other current posts
include: lecturer of Japanese culture at the Japan International Cooperation Agency (2003 –),
member of the board of directors of the Japan Association of Teaching Language and Culture (2008
–), adjunct lecturer of English linguistics at the graduate school of literature, Seijo University (2009
–). He is also the leading author of the Discovery English Communication series and New Discovery
English Communication series as well as the brand new series Ambition, which are all English
textbooks officially certified by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and
Technology. His other book publications include: English Grammar Handbook for the TOEFL Test
(2002), On to College (2004), Toward the Fusion of Language, Culture, and Education (2009), etc.
In his spare time, he studies Taoism and Stoicism.

Professor Miki Sugimura is a professor of Comparative and International Education, Faculty of Human Sciences at Sophia University in Japan, and the former Vice President for Global Academic Affairs from April 2014-March 2021 at Sophia. M.Ed. and PhD (University of Tokyo). She is a member of Japanese National Commission for UNESCO, President of Japan Comparative Education Society (JCES), and a board member of World Council of Comparative Education Societies (WCCES). She is also a visiting professor of the United Nations University Institute for the Advanced Study of Sustainability (UNU-IAS), and a board member of Toshiba International Foundation. Her research topics are international and transnational higher education, and multicultural education. Her recent publications include Policies and Issues of Short-term In-country International Courses (2020, co-editor), Equity in Excellence (2019, co-author), “The Role of UNESCO in Cross-border Higher Education for International Student Mobility” (2018), Cross-border Migration and the Nation-State: Transformation of Civil Society in the Post-Globalization World (2017, editor), Human Security and Peace Building (2017, co-author) and Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) and Citizenship Education in the Multi-cultural Societies (2014, co-editor).

Professor Dr. Khairul Anwar Mastor is the current Dean, School of Liberal Studies (Pusat Pengajian Citra Universiti), Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia. SLS is a multidisciplinary center managing and offering university and liberal courses offered by different faculties and SLS as well. Prof Khairul was among the keyperson in the process of restructuring general education modul in 2012-2013. He graduated with Bachelor, Master and PhD degrees from UKM, George Washington University, Washington DC, USA and The University of New South Wales, Australia respectively. He teaches Personality, Personality and Social Development, Personality and Life, and Emotion Management at UKM. To date, he had successfully supervised more than 20 PhD and 10 Master students and currently supervising more than 10 graduate students.

In research, Prof Khairul’s major interests are in two major areas: Assessment and Development. In the assessment line, he is interested in the assessment of personality, emotion and religiosity among Malaysians. He involved in the international collaborative project on Personality Profiles of Cultures (PPOC) headed by Dr Robert McCrae of NIH, USA in 2003-2005 – to study the personality profiles of more than 70 cultures and a NSF funded project on Culture and Personality headed by Prof Timothy Church, Washington State University, Pullman, USA. The second line of research is personality, emotion and religious development – investigating how religious activities affect the development of emotion and personality. Additionally, he has a number of statistical and methodological interests such as survey design, and experience sampling techniques, HLM, SEM, multilevel modeling and regression models. His research so far, has been funded by the UKM, MOE (FRGS), MOSTI (Science Fund), and GMMF Malaysia. He also received grants (as a co-researcher) from the National Institutes of Health (NIH), Oregon Research Institute, and the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH), USA. He was appointed as visiting scholars at Washington State University, Pullman, USA (2007), Humboldt University (2007), Berlin, Germany, and Laboratory of Personality and Cognition, NIA, NIH (2007) and Fulbright Visiting Scholar (University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, Illinois, USA (2008) and visiting professors at University of Lausanne (2010) and University of Oregon (2015). He has published several articles in Journal of Personality and Social Psychology (JPSP), Science, Journal of Research in Personality (JRP), European Journal of Personality (EJP), Journal of Cross-Cultural Psychology (JCCP) and other local journals as well. To date, his H-index is 20 and 2584 citations.

He received several research and service awards during his tenureship at UKM: UKM Highest Citation for Social Science (2017), UKM Best Researcher Award (2008), Fellowship for Advanced Research Award (MOSTI, 2007), Professional Service Award (NIA, NIH, 2007), William J. Fulbright Scholarship Award (2008) and UKM Excellent Service Award (2005). He was appointed as one of the experts in personality research by the European Association of Personality Psychology (EAPP) in the Expert Meeting on Values, Virtues and Personality in Rome, 28-30 October 2009 and Expert Meetings on Conceptualization and Measurement of Personality States, 10 September 2021.

His expertise has been benefited to the society through his involvement in conducting courses and training in Personality Development with Ministry of Women and Family through Institute of Social Malaysia, LPPKN and many others. It is his vision to contribute studies on personality, emotion and religiosity for the betterment of the people, nation and the world peace.

Dr. Fiffy Hanisdah Saikim graduated with a B.Sc. with Honours (Science and Aquatic Resource Management) from Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (UNIMAS) and M.Sc. (Nature Tourism) from Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS), Malaysia and a Ph.D. (Tourism), College of Business, Law and Governance, James Cook University, Cairns, Northern Queensland, Australia. Before joining as an academia in Universiti Malaysia Sabah, she worked as a consultant at WWF-Malaysia (Sabah branch) and as a Community Outreach Coordinator at SOS Rhino Berhad. Currently, she is working as a senior lecturer at the Institute for Tropical Biology and Conservation, Universiti Malaysia Sabah. She is also holding a position as the Executive Secretary for Malaysia Asian International Mobility for Students (AIMS) Programme, Education Malaysia Division under the Ministry of Higher Education Malaysia. She is also AIMS Coordinator for Universiti Malaysia Sabah from 2015 until present.
