HISTOLOGY LABORATORY
Histology also known as microscopic anatomy, is a branch of biology that studies the microscopic structure of cells, tissues, and organs under a microscope. The department’s Histology Laboratory is located on the 9th floor of the Preclinical Building at PPUKM. There are two laboratories, Histology Lab 5 and 6, equipped with specialized equipment for the preparation of histology slides. Among the equipment available in the Histology Laboratory are:
Microtome
Oven
Incubator
Microscope
Tissue Embedding Centre
This laboratory functions to prepare teaching and learning slides for Histology practical classes according to the prescribed modules. Learning slides are provided free of charge to Year 1 and Year 2 Bachelor of Medicine students. The slides supplied meet the standards set by the modules. In addition, the laboratory also serves as a research center for microscopic tissue studies. It has received visits from researchers and students from various academic levels and research backgrounds, both undergraduate and postgraduate, from within the UKM Faculty of Medicine, other UKM faculties, as well as from outside the university.
Among the routine staining techniques used in the Histology Laboratory are:
Hematoxylin and Eosin (H&E) Staining
Gordon and Sweets Staining
Verhoeff-Van Gieson (VVG) Staining
Masson’s Trichrome Staining
Periodic Acid–Schiff (PAS) Staining
Our laboratory is also capable of providing other special staining techniques upon request.
In addition, the laboratory also offers slide preparation services for local and international educational institutions that are interested. Please refer to the section [ Slide Preparation ].
