After more than a year of planning, the UMBI-INBIOSIS joint seminar was successfully held on the 17th of July 2017. In the spirit of interdisciplinary research, this seminar was held to further foster research collaboration between UMBI and INBIOSIS. The seminar started with an opening address from UMBI’s director, Prof Datuk Dr A Rahman A Jamal, followed by INBIOSIS’s director, Prof Ismanizan Ismail. Then, all research fellows from UMBI and INBIOSIS each presented a 5 minute-pitch regarding their research interests and current research. Even though research focus of each institute is different, where UMBI’s strength is in molecular medicine while INBIOSIS’s is in plant, insect and molecular microbiology, research platforms and approach used by both institutes are almost similar, and this could be used to the advantage of a joint collaboration. After the presentation, research fellows from both institutes mingled and discussed about potential research collaboration. Nevertheless, as mentioned by Prof Datuk Dr A Rahman A Jamal, planning alone is insufficient, all plans should be followed by implementation. With this in mind, it is hoped that this beneficial seminar will be one of the many seminars that will be conducted between UMBI and INBIOSIS in years to come, and that these seminars will open new doors of opportunities to strengthen collaborative research between UMBI and INBIOSIS.
