Program Structure and Entry Requirements

1. Master of Science (Research mode)

The delivery of this program is as follows:

i.   Present research proposal and progress in the Graduate Seminar
ii.  Research and preparation of thesis
iii. Candidates are required to register and pass 6 credits as follows:

4 credits of Research Methodology (Science and Technology) course
2 credits of elective courses (any 1 course):

  • Hydrogen Energy; OR
  • Energy Management and Policy; OR
  • Fuel Cell Electrochemistry; OR
  • Fuel Cell System and Application

iv. Register and pass the Malay language course (for international candidates only).
v.  At least one (1) article has been published or received for publication in a journal indexed by the Web of Science (WoS).

The minimum entry requirements are as follows:

  • Bachelor’s Degree with Honors and have a CGPA of 2.75 and above from Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia or equivalent from any institution of higher learning recognized by the Senate;
  • Bachelor’s Degree with Honors and have a CGPA between 2.50-2.74 from Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia or equivalent from any institution of higher learning recognized by the Senate and have at least 1-year working experience in a related field. If there is no working experience, the candidate must be a Research Assistant (RA) for a minimum period of 6 months and show a good performance certified by the supervisor; OR
  • Bachelor’s Degree with Honors and have a CGPA between 2.00-2.49 from Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia or equivalent from any institution of higher learning recognized by the Senate and have at least 5 years working experience in a related field. If there is no work experience, the candidate must be a Research Assistant (RA) for a minimum period of 1 year and show a good performance certified by the supervisor.

 

2. Doctor of Philosophy (Research mode)

The delivery of this program is as follows:

i.   Presenting research proposal and progress in the Graduate Seminar
ii.  Research and preparation of thesis
iii. Candidates are required to register and pass 8 credits as follows:

4 credits of Advance Research Methodology (Science and Technology) course
4 credits of elective courses (any two courses):

  • Advanced Hydrogen Energy; OR
  • Advanced Energy Management and Policy; OR
  • Advanced Fuel Cell Electrochemistry; ORAdvanced Fuel Cell System and Application

iv. Register and pass the Malay language course (for international candidates only).
v. At least two (2) articles have been published or received for publication in journals indexed by the Web of Science (WoS).

The minimum entry requirements are as follows:

  • Bachelor’s Degree with Honors and have a CGPA of 3.67 and above from Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia or equivalent from any institution of higher learning recognized by the Senate; OR
  • Master’s Degree from Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia or equivalent from any institution of higher learning recognized by the Senate.

 

3. Master of Science in Low Carbon and Hydrogen Technology (Coursework)

The delivery of this program is as follows:

This program requires the candidates to fulfill a total of 42 credits. The candidates must complete 5 core courses, 5 elective courses, and 1 research project (mini-dissertation) for graduation.

  • Modeling and Optimization in Energy System
  • Process Safety for Hydrogen Technology
  • Circular Economy
  • Electrochemistry for Energy Generation
  • Malay Language (for foreign candidates only)

The minimum entry requirements are as follows:

  • A Bachelor of Engineering degree/ Bachelor of Science/ Bachelor of Technology with honors (CGPA 2.5 and above) from any institution of higher learning recognized by the Senate; OR
  • A Bachelor of Engineering degree/ Bachelor of Science/ Bachelor of Technology with honors having CGPA 2.00 – 2.49 accompanying with at least 5 years of working experience in the science and technology field after obtaining the degree; OR
  • Fulfilling the Accreditation of Prior Experiential Learning (APEL A) with MQF Level 7 for Malaysian candidates only.

 

*English language requirements for international candidates:

1. International candidates MUST meet the English language requirements as follows:

  • Obtain a minimum TOEFL pBT score of 453; OR
  • Obtain a minimum TOEFL iBT score of 46; OR
  • Obtain a minimum TOEFL ITP score of 585; OR
  • Obtain a minimum IELTS score of 5.5; OR
  • Obtain a minimum MUET score of band 3.5;
  • Obtain a minimum Pearson Test of English score of 51; OR
  • Obtain a minimum Cambridge English Qualifications and Test score of 160.

 

2. International candidates who DO NOT MEET the English language competency requirements may be given the following CONDITIONAL OFFERS:

  • Students are allowed to attend the internal English Preparatory Course (Progressive English Programme, PEP) at UKM with a maximum period of two (2) years, but students are still subject to the regulations of the Immigration Department of Malaysia which is in force.

 

3. International candidates originating from a country that uses English as the OFFICIAL LANGUAGE or who have academic qualifications obtained from any institution of higher learning that uses English as the MEDIUM of instruction may be fully exempted from the English language requirement.
