Promote sustained, inclusive and sustainable economic growth, full and productive employment and decent work for all

SDG 8 Indicator

8.2 – Employment Practice

8.2.1 – Employment Practice Living Wage

Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM) ensures that all staff and faculty receive at least a living wage, reflecting the university’s strong commitment to fair and equitable employment practices. As a public institution, UKM adheres to the Malaysia Public Service Remuneration Scheme (Sistem Saraan Perkhidmatan Awam – SSPA), guaranteeing fair and competitive remuneration that exceeds both the national minimum wage and the poverty line income of RM2,208 as defined by the Economic Planning Unit (EPU).

The salary structure at UKM comprises Basic Salary + Fixed Allowances + Variable Components = Total Income, ensuring comprehensive compensation and financial stability for employees.

In December 2024, the Government of Malaysia introduced the new Public Service Remuneration System (SSPA), which includes a salary adjustment for all civil servants, including UKM personnel. Through this implementation, UKM continues to support the employment practice of providing a living wage, thereby strengthening the university’s commitment to decent work, financial security, and quality of life in alignment with SDG 8: Decent Work and Economic Growth.
