ES5 – Student led society whose purpose is to engage with sustainability
At Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM), students play a vital role in driving sustainability initiatives through a dedicated student-led society focused on environmental and sustainable development efforts. This society serves as a platform for students passionate about sustainability to collaborate, innovate, and take action on pressing environmental issues.

1. UKM EcoVolunteers Club
The establishment of EcoVolunteers Club started at Kolej Ibu Zain (KIZ) UKM in line with the college’s aspirations to become a sustainable college. This group is growing not only in the college but throughout UKM. EcoVolunteers Club focuses on three aspects of the elements in their movement, namely Knowledge, Community Service and Health. Exposure to knowledge about the environment and its ecosystem is very important for an ecovolunteer’s understanding of the function and role of the environment in our lives. The knowledge gained will be able to be used through a series of volunteering programs with the community in the form of lectures and various other activities to develop the ability to care for the environment. Therefore, all the efforts that have been taken in preserving the environment will be able to create a healthy and prosperous community and environment.

a) EcoVolunteers Module on Water and Waste Management at Program Lestari Air 2025
On 4 June 2025, Mr. Nik Mohd Noor Faizul bin Md Saad, together with the UKM EcoVolunteers Club, conducted a field-based learning module during the Program Lestari Air 2025, organized by the UNESCO International Hydrological Programme – Humid Tropics Centre Malaysia and its strategic partners, in conjunction with the National-Level World Water Day 2025 celebration. The program involved students from institutions of higher learning and secondary schools, and the module implementation focused on water quality, indicators of water pollution, as well as water and solid waste management.

b) EcoVolunteers Module on Water and Solid Waste Management at Water Resources and Environment Pioneer Camp
On 5th July 2025, the Water Resources and Environment Pioneer Camp involved the implementation of the UKM EcoVolunteers Module on Water and Solid Waste Management for primary school students. The program was organized by the Faculty of Earth Sciences in collaboration with UNESCO IHP Malaysia’s strategic partners, including UKM. The delivery approach was designed to be more engaging and appealing to young learners; however, core understanding of water resource management and its relationship with solid waste was successfully instilled among the students.

c) Jom Bersih Bukit Bintang
On 1st November 2025, EcoVolunteers Club had organized Jom Bersih Bukit Bintang collaboration with Dewan Bandaraya Kuala Lumpur (DBKL) as an initiative focused on keeping Bukit Bintang, a popular and bustling area in Kuala Lumpur, clean and well-maintained. The program aims to raise public awareness of the importance of environmental conservation and to encourage community involvement in environmental-based volunteer activities.

2. Environment and Green Energy of Malaysia Association (EniGMA-UKM)

a) Youth Economic and Sustainable Goals Forum
On 13th October 2025, UKM Malaysian Environment and Green Energy Association (EniGMA-UKM) had organized Youth Economic and Sustainable Goals Forum collaboration with UKM Strategy Centre, UKM International Strategic Negotiations and Sustainable Development Goals Center (UKM ISN SDG) and UKM Students’ Union (KMUKM). The program aims to explore ideas, opportunities, and the role of youth in realizing the nation’s sustainable economy. The forum session bringing together the voices of students, national leaders, industry players, and NGOs was successfully held at Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia, featuring rich and meaningful discourse. Through multi-stakeholder perspectives, participants had the opportunity to discuss critical issues such as green economic development, climate change, employment opportunities, and the role of students in advancing the nation’s sustainability agenda.

b) UKM Mini YESGo 2025
UKM Malaysian Environment and Green Energy Association (EniGMA-UKM) organized The Mini YESGo UKM 2025 programme successfully continued its series with two impactful sessions addressing key sustainability challenges faced by Malaysia.
Series 1, “Energy Poverty & Energy Transition”, took place on 7 September 2025 (Sunday). The session featured Tuan Adrian Banie Lasimbang, Chairman of TONIBUNG CREATE Borneo, who shared valuable perspectives on community-based energy solutions and the realities of energy poverty, particularly in rural and underserved areas.
Series 2, titled “Drafting the Climate Change Act?”, was held on 20 September 2025 (Saturday). The session featured insightful discussions from invited panelists Awatif Iman, a UKM Law student, and Ameer Hazeem Mohd Zaky, the Opposition Leader of the Youth Parliamentary Debathon 2023. The panel explored legal frameworks, youth participation, and policy considerations surrounding the formulation of a Climate Change Act, sparking active engagement among participants.
The Mini YESGo UKM 2025 programme continues to serve as an important platform for youth-driven dialogue on sustainability, governance, and climate-related policies, encouraging informed participation in shaping Malaysia’s future.

c) Creative Recycling Workshop: Transforming Waste into Value
On 23rd May 2025, the Green Campus Sustainability Bureau, Kolej Pendeta Za’ba, in collaboration with ENIGMA-UKM, successfully conducted a Creative Recycling Workshop at Sekolah Kebangsaan Jalan Empat, Bandar Baru Bangi.
A total of 80 Year 5 students participated in the workshop, which focused on raising awareness of the importance of recycling and reusing waste materials through a creative approach. The programme reflects the strong commitment of university students in nurturing sustainability values and a spirit of community service from an early age. Sincere appreciation is extended to all parties who contributed to the success of this programme.

3. MYAgrosis UKM
The Myagrosis Club was established to help students interested in the basic agricultural and food industries. This club is directly guided by MARDI and UKM-CESMED. Club members will be given the opportunity to attend courses related to the basic fields of agriculture and food as a guide in running a business.

a) Essential Oil–Based Product Processing Technology Program
On 17 June 2025, MyAgrosis Club UKM, in collaboration with MARDI Kuala Linggi and CESMED UKM, successfully organised the Essential Oil–Based Product Processing Technology Programme, held around the MARDI Kuala Linggi area and the aromatic site visit location. The programme provided early exposure to the essential oil industry and aimed to strengthen the entrepreneurial spirit among young agropreneurs.
Through lectures, technology demonstrations, and group activities, participants not only learned the essential oil production process from both theoretical and practical perspectives, but also had the opportunity to develop skills such as teamwork, creativity, and critical thinking in addressing real-world challenges in the field.

b) Mangroves Tree Program
The Mangroves Tree 2024 programme, organised by Kelab Kufah in collaboration with Kelab MyAgrosis, was successfully carried out on 24 November 2024 at Pantai Kelanang, Kuala Langat. This joint initiative made a meaningful contribution to environmental conservation efforts by supporting the sustainability of mangrove ecosystems, while also fostering environmental awareness and responsibility among participants.

4. Environmental Science Club UKM
The Environmental Science Club is a student-led organization dedicated to promoting environmental awareness, sustainability, and scientific exploration of the natural world. The mission is to inspire individuals to take action in protecting the environment through education, research, and community engagement. The club organizes a variety of activities, including eco-campaigns, clean-up projects, tree-planting initiatives, workshops, field trips, and sustainability talks. Through these efforts, we aim to cultivate a deeper understanding of environmental issues such as climate change, pollution, biodiversity conservation, and sustainable living.

On 9th October 2025, the Environmental Science Club successfully organized the KESAS Interaction Day with first-year students of the 2025/2026 session. The event provided an engaging platform for new students to get to know their seniors, learn more about the club’s activities, and foster a sense of community within the department. Through ice-breaking sessions, informative presentations, and interactive activities, participants were encouraged to share ideas, build connections, and develop an early appreciation for environmental awareness and sustainability initiatives. 5. Environmental Health Club UKM
The Environmental Health Club UKM is a student-led organization at Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM) dedicated to promoting environmental health awareness, sustainability, and public well-being. The mission is to bridge the connection between the environment and human health by educating, advocating, and taking action to address environmental challenges that impact our daily lives.
The club organizes various activities such as environmental health campaigns, clean-up projects, workshops, research discussions, field trips, and community outreach programs. On 11 June 2025, Environmental Health Club UKM had organized the Community Health Awareness Program 2025 (Program Intai Komuniti Sihat 2025) at SMK Taman Kosas. The program featured activities such as a community clean-up (gotong-royong) and interactive sessions with residents at Gugusan Rosa Apartments, Kota Damansara. It made a significant impact by encouraging students to embrace social responsibility and volunteerism through direct participation. This joint effort not only enhanced ties between the university and the local community but also promoted mutual respect and a sense of unity. Moreover, the initiative helped raise awareness about the importance of cleanliness and maintaining a healthy environment within the community.

6. Social Environmental and Development Sustainability Research (SEEDS) Student Club
SEEDS Student Club is a group of Student Club of the Center Social Environmental and Development Sustainability Research (SEEDS) at UKM. The club is dedicated to advancing sustainability through a holistic approach that integrates social well-being, environmental conservation and sustainable development.
The mission is to empower students with the knowledge, skills, and opportunities to engage in sustainability-related initiatives. a) SEEDS UKM x GAPP USM Environmental Exploration Program
On 2-4 May 2025, The SEEDS Environmental Exploration Programme, organized in collaboration with GAPP, was successfully held at Universiti Sains Malaysia, located in George Town, Penang, Malaysia. This collaborative initiative brought together students from SEEDS of Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM) and GAPP of Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) to strengthen awareness and engagement in environmental sustainability.
The programme aimed to expose participants to various environmental issues while fostering knowledge exchange, collaboration, and networking among students who share a common interest in sustainability and environmental stewardship. Throughout the programme, participants were involved in a series of interactive activities, discussions, and exploratory sessions that highlighted the importance of protecting natural ecosystems and promoting sustainable practices within the community.

b) Bakti SEEDS 4.0 programme
On 24 January 2025, Bakti SEEDS 4.0 programme, organized by Environment and Development Sustainability Research (SEEDS) Student Club, was successfully held at TASKA Satu Azam in Bandar Teknologi Kajang. The programme featured a variety of engaging activities, including ice-breaking sessions, gotong-royong (community cleaning and teamwork activities), and interactive games, designed to foster collaboration, creativity, and a sense of community among participants.
Through these activities, the volunteers and children were able to bond meaningfully, while the students gained hands-on experience in community service and leadership. The programme not only contributed to the physical upkeep of the childcare centre, but also promoted values such as teamwork, social responsibility, and empathy. By combining fun activities with purposeful service, Bakti SEEDS 4.0 left a lasting impact on both the participants and the TASKA Satu Azam community, reinforcing the importance of youth involvement in local community development.
7. Earth and Space Science Graduate Association (ESSA-UKM)
Earth and Space Science Graduate Association (ESSA-UKM) are a group of student community mainly from Institute of Climate Change, UKM and collaboratives with other members from FST and FTSM. The Earth and Space Science Graduate Association (ESSA-UKM) is dedicated to promoting awareness, education, and engagement in the field of Earth sciences. As a platform for aspiring geologists, environmentalists, and earth science enthusiasts, ESSA organizes a variety of activities, including field trips, workshops, seminars, research projects, and outreach programs. Through these initiatives, we aim to equip students with knowledge, practical skills, and networking opportunities essential for their academic and professional growth.

8 October 2025, The Earth and Space Science Students’ Association (ESSA) organised an educational visit to the Malaysian Nuclear Agency for UKM students. 8. Friends of Garden Club (Kelab Rakan Taman)
The Friends of Garden Club (Kelab Rakan Taman) is a student-driven organization at Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM) dedicated to promoting environmental conservation, sustainability, and community engagement within campus green spaces and beyond. a) Gempita Istana Puteri Bongsu 2025
On 18 September 2025, in conjunction with the GEMPITA 2025 program, the Friends of Garden Club participated in a tree-planting initiative at Istana Puteri Bongsu, UKM. Organized by the Institute of the Malay World and Civilization (ATMA), UKM, in collaboration with the British Council, UNESCO, the Department of Museums Malaysia, and other partners, the activity featured trees generously contributed by the Kajang Municipal Council (MPKj).
Beyond heritage preservation, this activity serves as a core component of the university’s sustainability framework. By expanding the campus canopy, the project directly contributes to carbon sequestration, enhances local biodiversity, and mitigates the urban heat island effect. Furthermore, this initiative aligns with sustainability, fostering an ecologically resilient campus environment while promoting community stewardship of natural resources.

On 8th October 2025, The Friends of Garden Club (Kelab Rakan Taman) organised Sustainable Campus: Taman Alam Ilmu, Pusat Strategi UKM. Through this initiative, participants develop a deeper understanding of sustainability and the role of green spaces in enhancing campus life. The programme encourages eco-friendly practices, fosters a sense of community responsibility, and serves as a platform for experiential learning. By maintaining and utilizing Taman Alam Ilmu, the university strengthens its commitment to environmental conservation, while inspiring students and staff to adopt sustainable habits both on and off campus.

c) Antarctica Day: Tree-planting programs
On 1 December 2025, the Rakan Taman Club participated in a tree-planting program in conjunction with Antarctica Day, organized by the UKM Institute of Climate Change (IPI). This collaborative initiative served as a symbolic and practical response to the global climate crisis. By planting trees, the Rakan Taman Club and the UKM Institute of Climate Change aimed to highlight the critical link between local ecosystem health and the preservation of the Antarctic ice sheets. Participants were educated on how urban reforestation helps sequester carbon dioxide, effectively acting as a “green lung” to mitigate the rising temperatures that threaten polar regions.

18 December 2025, UKM Citra Student Association organised Inspiration for the Future of Directed Excellent Students (IMPACT). The IMPACT program is a strategic initiative designed to empower high-achieving students by providing them with a clear roadmap for their academic and professional journeys. 10. Solar Research Institute Student Association (SERISA)
The Solar Research Institute Student Association (SERISA) is a student organization at Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM) that focuses on promoting awareness and knowledge in renewable energy and sustainability. The club aims to organize large-scale, structured outreach programmes that target primary and lower secondary school students, particularly those from rural communities.
These programmes are designed to increase interest and understanding in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) while introducing students to the importance and potential of solar energy as a sustainable energy source. Through educational activities, interactive learning sessions, and awareness campaigns, SERISA seeks to inspire young students to explore STEM fields and foster early awareness of renewable energy and environmental sustainability.

a) Perovskite Solar Cell Optimization Workshop Using Response Surface Methodology (RSM)
In September 2025, the Solar Research Institute Student Association (SERISA) at Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM) organized the Perovskite Solar Cell Optimization Workshop Using Response Surface Methodology (RSM).
The workshop aimed to enhance students’ research and analytical skills in solar energy studies. A total of 10 students were trained in Response Surface Methodology (RSM), focusing on its application in experimental design and data analysis to optimize the performance of perovskite solar cells. Through this programme, participants gained practical exposure to systematic research methods that support innovation in renewable energy and solar technology.

b) Southeast Asia Collaborative Symposium on Energy Materials
In October 2025, the Solar Research Institute Student Association (SERISA) at Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM) organized the Southeast Asia Collaborative Symposium on Energy Materials. The symposium brought together regional experts, researchers, and students to share knowledge and discuss the latest developments in energy materials and renewable energy technologies.
The programme successfully strengthened research collaboration and networking among participants across Southeast Asia, while encouraging knowledge exchange in the field of sustainable energy. The event was supported by RM8,295.00 in sponsorship, which contributed to the successful implementation of the symposium and facilitated broader academic engagement.
