Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia offers dedicated training on environmental aspects of sustainability for both staff and students. This training is designed to raise awareness and provide practical knowledge about environmental challenges and sustainability practices, encouraging the university community to adopt eco-friendly habits and actively participate in sustainability initiatives. This dedicated training would help create a more environmentally conscious community at UKM, where both staff and students play an active role in supporting sustainability initiatives and contribute to making the university a model of sustainable practices.

Several examples of the training on environmental aspects of sustainability for both staff and students at UKM is shown below:
1. Sustainable Workshop for UKM Responsibility Centres
On 4-5 March 2025, Sustainable Workshop for UKM Responsibility Centres was organized by UKM Strategy Center. The programme aims to serve as a preparatory initiative to strengthen the University’s readiness in producing comprehensive sustainability reporting for international sustainability rankings such as the QS Sustainability Ranking, THE Impact Rankings, and UI GreenMetric. Beyond enhancing data presentation and reporting capabilities, the programme plays a critical role in improving data accuracy, consistency, and inter-departmental coordination among responsibility centres. This initiative also increases institutional awareness and capacity in embedding sustainability practices across governance, teaching, research, operations, and community engagement, thereby supporting evidence-based decision-making and strengthening the University’s global visibility, credibility, and competitiveness in sustainability performance.

2. Strategic Sustainability KPI Workshop 2025
On 24-25 June 2025, Strategic Sustainability KPI Workshop 2025 was organized by UKM Strategy Center involving Faculties and Responsibility Centres (PTJ) at Everly Hotel, Putrajaya. The workshop strengthened the implementation of sustainability-related strategic KPIs aligned with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), emphasised the integration of sustainability values into the University’s strategic planning, reviewed PTJ Sustainability Annual Reports for 2023 and 2024, and evaluated high-impact SDG-based programmes. This demonstrates that UKM provides dedicated, structured training and workshops that address sustainability governance, performance measurement, and environmental and SDG-related impacts, confirming the existence of formal training on sustainability aspects, including environmental sustainability.

3. Sustainability Strategic Plan 2030 Workshop
On 19–21 September 2025, Sustainability Strategic Plan 2030 Workshop was organized by Center for International Strategic Negotiations and Sustainable Development Goals UKM (UKM ISN-SDG) involving Faculties and Responsibility Centres (PTJ) at Avillion Admiral Cove Hotel, Port Dickson. The workshop strengthens its global leadership in the sustainability agenda through the organisation of the Sustainability Strategic Plan 2030 Workshop. Over three days, the workshop brought together leaders, experts, and academics to assess progress, strengthen strategies, and chart new directions that are sustainable, inclusive, and high-impact, in alignment with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

4. Sustainable Environmental Exploration (SEE) (2.0)
On 13 November 2025, an environmental exploration and climate change program titled “Sustainable Environmental Exploration (SEE) (2.0) was organized by The Environmental Management Center (EMC) under the Climate Change Institute (IPI), Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM), in collaboration with the Earth and Space Science Graduate Association (ESSA) and the UKM Strategy Center. The program is a mandatory training for students and staff at UKM in order to educate and raise awareness among support, professional staff and students from the fourteen faculties at UKM about climate change issues and to encourage proactive actions for environmental conservation in a fun and interactive way.
This program is conducted in one (1) day and involves the participation of five (5) staff members and five (5) students from each of the fourteen (14) faculties at UKM. Each group needs to complete seven (7) activity checkpoints with 20 minutes allocated for each checkpoint. The teams will move from one checkpoint to the next, and each group will be given a completion card to be stamped at each checkpoint they complete. The use of smartphones is prohibited during the activities at the checkpoints.

5. Science and Environment Near to Heart (SENTOH)(2.0)@IPI
On 11 September 2025, the Science and Environment Near to Heart (SENTOH)(2.0)@IPI program was organized by The Environmental Management Center (EMC) under the Climate Change Institute (IPI), Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM). This program is an environmental initiative aimed at instilling a sense of love and care for the environment, and in turn, creating a community that is aware of environmental and climate change issues and mandatory for students and staff at UKM. This edition of the SENTOH series targets participation from members of the Institute of Climate Change. The programme features a variety of engaging environmental activities, including Eco-Routine Tree: MyGreen Print, Environmental Charade, Trash Sort Relay Race, and Itu ke Ini?, aimed at assessing participants’ levels of knowledge and awareness of environmental issues and climate change.

SENTOH UKM (Science and Environment Near to Heart) is an environmental initiative by the Environmental Management Centre (EMC) under the Institute of Climate Change (IPI), UKM. The program was designed to instill environmental consciousness among UKM staff and students before expanding to the wider community.Through these activities, participants gained a deeper understanding of climate change impacts and the importance of adopting sustainable habits.
The SENTOH UKM program is to open the eyes and minds of the UKM community to the importance of proper environmental care and management in daily life, thereby shaping a more environmentally conscious society that is competitive and dedicated to preserving and conserving the environment.

6. Science and Environment Near to Heart (SENTOH)(2.0)@STEM (MINDA-UKM)
On 7 September 2025, the Science and Environment Near to Heart (SENTOH)(2.0)@STEM (MINDA-UKM) program was being organized at STEM (MINDA-UKM) . Through this programme, students are systematically exposed to environmental education and hands-on activities that build awareness and understanding of climate change, environmental conservation, and sustainable practices. Implemented in collaboration with university staff and sustainability-focused centres, SENTOH reflects UKM’s commitment to providing targeted training that strengthens environmental literacy, encourages behavioural change, and supports the University’s broader sustainability agenda.

7. Science and Environment Near to Heart (SENTOH)(2.0)@Program Transformasi Minda (PTM UKM)
On 12 – 17 October 2025, the Science and Environment Near to Heart (SENTOH)(2.0)@ Program Transformasi Minda (PTM UKM) program was organized at Premiere Hotel, Klang. It serves as a compulsory course for new staff, providing exposure to nationhood, public administration, and workplace culture, while also functioning as a requirement for job confirmation. The course aims to develop holistic, competitive, and first-class minded staff through exposure to personal development skills and the functions of public service.
Science and Environment Near to Heart (SENTOH) is one of the mandatory courses undertaken by all newly appointed staff at Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM).the program supports the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by promoting responsible behavior, environmental stewardship, and community engagement. It helps cultivate individuals who are more conscious of sustainability issues and capable of contributing to a more resilient and sustainable society.

8. Citra Ekorelawan Course (LMCP1522 – Environmental Ecosystem Exploration) 2025
The Citra Ekorelawan Course (LMCP1522 – Environmental Ecosystem Exploration) 2025 is an additional credited activity under UKM’s Ekorelawan initiative. It serves as a platform to attract students, particularly undergraduates, by providing practical exposure to ecosystem management. The course is managed by Institute for Environment and Development (LESTARI UKM).
Learning Outcomes:
- Understanding the concepts of environmental conservation and restoration.
- Gaining fundamental knowledge of ecosystem preservation.
- Conducting environmental community service activities.
The UKM Ekorelawan Program, including modules such as waste management, energy, soil, water, and geology, has a significant impact on students’ training in environmental awareness and sustainability. 9. Youth Economic and Sustainable Goals Forum
On 13 October 2025, the Youth Economic and Sustainable Goals Forum was organized by Environment and Green Energy of Malaysia Association (EniGMA-UKM). The forum carried the theme “Shared Prosperity Through the SDGs”, aiming to explore ideas, opportunities, and the role of youth in realizing a sustainable national economy. It raised an important question: How can the younger generation become a catalyst for a sustainable economy aligned with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The program served as a platform to transform youth from passive observers into proactive environmental advocates and innovators. By strengthening environmental knowledge, skills, and leadership capacity, the forum contributed to nurturing a generation capable of driving Malaysia’s transition toward a low-carbon, resilient, and sustainable economy.

10. 360 Declutter Forum: Psychology & Sustainability
On 20 February 2025, the Institute of Climate Change, Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia organized the 360 Declutter Forum: Psychology & Sustainability, which connected behavioral science with environmental responsibility. The forum highlighted how personal consumption habits and overconsumption contribute to waste generation, carbon emissions, and resource depletion. The program strengthened participants’ understanding of responsible consumption, circular economy practices, and waste reduction strategies. Through practical exposure to sustainable lifestyle planning and ecological footprint awareness, participants were encouraged to adopt mindful purchasing, reuse, and proper waste management practices. Overall, the forum promoted lasting behavioral change and empowered individuals to contribute actively to environmental sustainability and climate action.

11. IPI Seminar Series 2/2025: “Disaster at Both Ends: How Climate Change Intensifies Droughts and Floods in Malaysia”
On 21 May 2025, the Institute of Climate Change, Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia organized the IPI Seminar Series 2/2015 titled “Disaster at Both Ends: How Climate Change Intensifies Droughts and Floods in Malaysia.” The seminar enhanced participants’ understanding of how climate change increases extreme weather events and affects ecosystems, water security, and communities. It strengthened knowledge on climate adaptation, sustainable water management, disaster risk reduction, and nature-based solutions, while reinforcing the importance of environmental resilience and alignment with Climate Action (SDG 13). Overall, the program equipped participants with greater awareness and practical insights to support environmental sustainability in addressing climate-related risks.

12. Student carbon footprint workshop: Sustaining UKM as a Green Campus
On 24 July 2025, the Institute for Environment and Development (LESTARI), Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia organized the Student Carbon Footprint Workshop: Sustaining UKM as a Green Campus. The workshop significantly strengthened environmental sustainability awareness by helping students understand how daily activities such as transportation choices, electricity consumption, food habits, and waste generation contribute to greenhouse gas emissions. By learning how to calculate and interpret their individual carbon footprints, participants gained practical insight into the environmental impact of their lifestyles. The program equipped students with technical knowledge on carbon accounting basics, emission sources, data collection methods, and simple mitigation strategies aligned with low-carbon campus initiatives. Participants were introduced to sustainable mobility practices, energy efficiency measures, waste reduction strategies, and responsible consumption principles.

13. Sustainability Webinar 1/2025 : SDG-Aligned Solutions to Key Malaysian Problems: An Invitation to Join the Work of SDSN-Asia
On 10 April 2025, the Institute for Environment and Development (LESTARI) UKM organized Sustainability Webinar 1/2025: “SDG-Aligned Solutions to Key Malaysian Problems: An Invitation to Join the Work of SDSN-Asia.” The webinar strengthened participants’ understanding of how national environmental challenges such as climate change, biodiversity loss, urban sustainability, and resource management can be addressed through integrated, SDG-aligned strategies. It highlighted the importance of evidence-based policy, multi-stakeholder collaboration, and regional networks like SDSN-Asia in accelerating sustainable development.
the program exposed participants to systems thinking approaches, sustainability assessment tools, and SDG mapping techniques to align projects and research with measurable environmental outcomes. It enhanced capacity in designing climate adaptation and mitigation initiatives, promoting nature-based solutions, advancing circular economy practices, and supporting low-carbon development pathways.

14. Assessing Urban Heat Island in Southeast Asia Megacities: An Integrated Study of Land Use, Climate Change, and Heatwave Occurrences Workshop
On 26–27 August 2025, the Institute of Climate Change UKM organized the workshop titled “Assessing Urban Heat Island in Southeast Asia Megacities: An Integrated Study of Land Use, Climate Change, and Heatwave Occurrences.” The workshop significantly enhanced participants’ understanding of how rapid urbanization, land use changes, and climate change interact to intensify Urban Heat Island (UHI) effects and increase heatwave risks in major cities. It highlighted the environmental and public health implications of rising urban temperatures, including energy demand, water stress, ecosystem degradation, and heat-related illnesses.
participants were exposed to interdisciplinary approaches combining climate science, geospatial analysis, land use planning, and environmental data interpretation. The workshop strengthened technical skills in assessing temperature distribution, analyzing urban morphology, and identifying high-risk heat zones. It also introduced sustainable mitigation strategies such as green infrastructure, urban tree canopy expansion, reflective materials, sustainable building design, and climate-responsive urban planning.

15. KAB Edutourism
On 24–25 February, the KAB Edutourism program was held at the Chini Lake Research Centre (PPTC). KAB Edutourism is a collaborative initiative between Kolej Aminuddin Baki and the UKM Natural and Physical Laboratory Management Centre (ALAF-UKM). This program is one of the college’s initiatives under the academia framework towards holistic development, grounded in three main pillars: education, environmental sustainability, and tourism. Through this program, participants had the opportunity to experience a unique learning journey through meaningful interactions between people and the natural environment.
KAB Edutourism also witnessed the release of 25 young lotus plants into Chini Lake, with the assistance of staff from the Chini Lake Research Centre and the participation of 43 members of Kolej Aminuddin Baki, including UKM international students.

16. Microalgae Workshop II 2025: Strengthening Green Technology Innovation and Wastewater Treatment
The Microalgae Workshop II, organized by the Centre for Sustainable Process Technology (CESPRO) and the UKM-YSD Sustainability Chair on July 7, 2025, aimed to enhance the understanding and feasibility of microalgae technology within the industry. Held in collaboration with the Department of Chemical and Process Engineering (JKKP) at the Faculty of Engineering and Built Environment (FKAB), this workshop followed the inaugural 2023 edition with a more comprehensive focus on green technology applications and wastewater treatment.
The two-day event gathered 23 participants—including higher education researchers, local industry players, and international representatives from the Philippines, India, Bangladesh, and Indonesia—who attended both physically and virtually. Key objectives included providing exposure and training on effective microalgae cultivation techniques, microalgae biorefinery and nanocellulose applications, cell disruption methods to boost bioproduct yields, and the use of microalgae as bioremediation agents for wastewater treatment.
