MASTER OF HEALTH SCIENCE

FSK UKM was offered Master programme in two distinct modes: Research Mode and Coursework Mode.

Research mode program was conducted primarily through research. In FSK UKM about 22 research fields available for prospective candidates to choose from. Throughout their studies, students will conduct research work under the supervision of dedicated academic staff from various expertise who are involved in various cutting-edge research areas that have an impact on society and the country.

The Coursework Mode programme is structured to be completed within a one and half year to two years study period, combining coursework and a dissertation to achieve its learning objectives. A total of four programs are offered under this mode at FSK UKM.

The main goal for both programs is to explore novel discoveries and develop advanced critical thinking skills, ultimately producing highly qualified and competitive graduates for the job market.

Master in Health Sciences (Research Mode)

Program Offered

Prospective candidates can choose from a wide range of 22 specialized research fields, including but not limited to:

Type of Study

FSK UKM offer a Master in Health Sciences degree conducted entirely through research mode.

Duration of Study

Full time: 

  • Minimum 2 semester 
  • Maximum 6 semester

Part Time:

  • Minimum 4 semester
  • Maximum 8 semester

International students are only permitted to enroll for Full-Time study.

Entry Requirements
  • Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field with a cumulative grade point average (CGPA) of ≥2.75 from a recognized higher education institution;

                                                   or

  • Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field with a CGPA between 2.50 and 2.75, subject to a detailed evaluation by an internal committee;

                                                 or

  • Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field with a CGPA below 2.50, along with a minimum of five years of relevant work experience, subject to a detailed evaluation by an internal committee;

                                                 or

  • Other equivalent qualifications recognized by the Senate, including relevant experience.

Specific Entry Requirements for Master of Health Sciences (Physiotherapy):

  • Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field with a CGPA of ≥3.00 from a recognized higher education institution;

                                                        or

  • Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field with a CGPA of ≥2.75, along with a minimum of three years of relevant work experience from a recognized higher education institution
  • International applicant should get​ a minimum of TOEFL iBT: Minimum score of 46; or TOEFL Essentials (Online): Minimum score of 8; or ​IELTS: Minimum Band 5.5; or HEET: Minimum level 7; Equivalent scores from any recognized English proficiency test based on the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) equivalency table approved by the Senate

2. Consultancy (Government & Private Sectors)

  • Health Sciences Consultant: Provide expert advice to government agencies, private companies, healthcare facilities, and NGOs on specialized matters related to nutrition, environmental health, occupational safety, biomedical analysis, and public health policy.

  • Research Consultant: Offer expertise in designing research studies, data analysis, and interpreting results for various clients in the health and life sciences industries.

3. Research & Development (R&D)

  • Research Officer in Government and Private Institutes: Lead or contribute to research projects at national research institutes (e.g., Institute for Medical Research), university research centers, or R&D departments in multinational companies (e.g., pharmaceutical, biotechnology, food science).

4. Specialized Clinical & Healthcare Practice

  • Clinical Specialist: Assume advanced practice or specialist roles in hospitals or clinics in fields such as Dietetics, Physiotherapy, Biomedical Science, Radiotherapy, or Audiology, often handling complex cases and developing new treatment protocols.

5. Public Health & Policy

  • Public Health Analyst / Epidemiologist: Work with government health departments (e.g., Ministry of Health) or international bodies to investigate disease patterns, manage health programs, and shape public health policies.

  • Environmental Health Officer: Specialize in ensuring public safety by monitoring and enforcing environmental health regulations.

6. Industry & Corporate Sector

  • Regulatory Affairs Specialist: Ensure that products (medicines, medical devices, food) comply with all national and international regulations before they can be marketed.

Program Structure

This program involves research under the close supervision of an appointed supervisory committee throughout the duration of the study until graduation.

Students are required to take the Research Methodology and Biostatistics course. Additionally, international students are required to enroll in the Malay Language course, which is conducted by the CITRA UKM Centre.

Supervision

Graduation Requirements
  1. Completion of Original Research

    • The student must successfully complete an original research project under the guidance of an appointed supervisory committee.

  2. Thesis Submission and Examination

    • Submit a written thesis that complies with the academic standards and formatting guidelines set by UKM.

    • The thesis will be rigorously examined and assessed by both internal and external examiners.

  3. Viva Voce (Oral Examination)

    • Attend and successfully defend the thesis in a viva voce (oral examination).

  4. Publication Requirement 

    • Produce one (1) scientific article related to the research that has at least been accepted for publication in a Web of Science (WoS) indexed journal.

  5. Compulsory Coursework

    • Pass the Research Methodology and Biostatistics course.

    • International students must pass the Malay Language course conducted by the UKM CITRA Centre.

  6. Duration of Study

    • Fulfill the minimum and maximum duration of study as stipulated by the university’s regulations.

  7. Administrative and Financial Compliance

    • Settle all administrative formalities and financial obligations to the university.

  • Graduates are trained in specialised fields of biomedical sciences such as Chemical Pathology, Infectious Diseases and Natural Product Toxicology
