BANGI, 23 August 2025 – Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM) has officially launched the 36th Architectural Student Workshop (MARTABAT) 2025, bringing together architecture students from Malaysia, Indonesia, and Thailand to strengthen academic industry linkage and foster regional collaboration within the architectural community.

The opening ceremony was officiated by the Chairman of the UKM’s Board of Directors, Prof. Emeritus Dato’ Dr. Mohamad Abd. Razak highlighted the significance of architecture as a reflection of identity, heritage, and values that must be preserved and advanced by the younger generations.

“And today, through MARTABAT 2025, I see the spirit of that balance alive and thriving among our students.

“This gathering is more than a workshop. It is a stage where leadership, ideas, and aspirations are tested.

“It is a reminder that the profession must rise to the challenges of our age — climate change, urbanisation, sustainability — with courage, creativity, and compassion,” he said.

In his speech, Prof. Emeritus Dato’ Dr. Mohamad also announced UKM’s plan to establish a Faculty of Architecture and Design, marking a significant milestone for the university and nation.

“A faculty devoted to architecture and design will serve as a guardian of heritage, a forge of innovation, and a torchbearer of Malaysian identity on the global stage.

“And it is most fitting that this news is shared here — in the presence of our students, academics, and professional partners,” he added.

MARTABAT 2025 serves as a vital platform for students to showcase their creativity and expertise through various activities, while also strengthening collaboration between higher learning institutions and professional bodies across nations.

The programme is organised by the Faculty of Engineering and Built Environment through the Department of Architecture and Built Environment, in collaboration with the Malaysian Institute of Architecture (PAM).
