Biography:
Dr. Chu is a senior lecturer at the National University of Malaysia, Faculty of Health Sciences. She is also a speech therapist and clinical educator at the university’s Audiology and Speech Sciences Clinic. Dr. Chu was trained at the University of Kansas, first undertaking her B.A (Honors) in Psychology, and subsequently M.A. and Ph.D. in Speech-Language-Pathology. Dr. Chu’s post-doctoral fellowship was at the National Rehabilitation Center for Persons with Disabilities, Japan. During her post-doctoral fellowship, she has developed numerous Japanese assessment tools and treatment protocols for speech therapists in managing clients with stuttering under the sponsorship of the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science. Dr. Chu’s clinical work deals with the treatment of children with stuttering, speech-language delay, and adults suffering from motor speech disorders. Her research interests involve understanding the speech motor control and quantification of speech motor performance in normal and disorders population. The focus of this research has been directed at developing assessment tools for patients with Parkinson’s disease and stuttering. Most recently, her specific interest has involved examining the social participation in patients with communication disorders and evidence-based practice among Asia’s allied health professionals.
