j) Community Sustainability Program Helps Village Residents in Kedah
Researchers from Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM) have taken the initiative to organize the Community Sustainability Empowerment Program on Environmental Impact and Climate Change to assist residents in the Kota Setar and Yan districts of Kedah who have been affected by climate change. The program aims to raise awareness and instill a sense of responsibility among local communities toward environmental sustainability in achieving a sustainable way of life.
The selected village communities are those identified as residing in areas impacted by climate change, such as coastal erosion, saltwater intrusion into paddy fields, and natural disasters like floods. Held at the As-Sa’adah Mosque Courtyard in Kampung Tebengau, Kuala Kedah, the program gathered 170 participants, including representatives from local agencies such as the Muda Agricultural Development Authority (MADA), E-Idaman Sdn. Bhd., and the Department of Irrigation and Drainage (JPS), as well as local community members from Kota Setar District (Kampung Padang Garam, Kampung Seberang Kota, Kampung Tebengau, Kampung Sala Kecil) and Kampung Sala Besar, Yan District, Kedah.
The program was initiated following a preliminary survey conducted by a research team comprising lecturers and officers from the UKM-YSD Sustainability Chair, who visited the community on November 29, 2023. One of the key issues identified was waste management among residents, where most household waste was either discharged into nearby drainage systems or burned. Such environmental practices contribute to local pollution, flash floods, and health problems such as the spread of dengue fever and other diseases.
This community intervention program serves as an initial step to foster collaboration with local communities in implementing activities that empower them toward a healthier and more sustainable lifestyle. To ensure the program’s relevance and effectiveness, the research team has developed a Community Environmental Sustainability Empowerment Module, which serves as a reading reference and guide. Program activities, including Waste, Water, Energy, and Disaster Management, have been carefully designed to contribute to the sustainability and well-being of local communities in line with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), which promote global progress through a balance of social, economic, and environmental aspects.
The Community Sustainability Empowerment Program for Climate Change and Environmental Impact is highly significant, as a conducive environment contributes to the overall well-being of society.
