List of Speakers and Trainers

Dr. Low Chen Fei obtained his PhD in molecular biotechnology from Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) in 2015. His current research focuses on aquatic animal health and diseases. He is interested in the study of host-pathogen interaction using high-throughput omics technologies, to comprehend the fundamental of immunological responses of the aquatic animal against infection. His research also include the development of prophylactic and therapeutic agents against infectious diseases in aquatic animal, specifically for grouper and giant freshwater prawn species. If you are interested in collaborating with her, being part of her research group, or have any inquiries regarding the Research Plot, please email her at low@ukm.edu.my.

Assoc. Prof. Dr. Ng Chyan Leong is a structural biologist. He completed his PhD in York Structural Biology Laboratory (YSBL), Chemistry Department, University of York, UK in 2007 under the supervision of Prof. Dr. Fred Antson. He then worked as a Postdoctoral Fellow in Dr. Venki Ramakrishnan’s group at the Medical Research Council, Laboratory of Molecular Biology (MRC-LMB), Cambridge, UK, focusing on ribosome and protein translation. He joined INBIOSIS in 2012 as a Research Fellow and has established the recombinant protein purification, protein crystallization and protein analysis platform in the Institute. Please feel free to contact Dr. Ng (clng@ukm.edu.my) for research and industrial projects collaboration.

Dr. Emelda Rosseleena Rohani is currently a fellow researcher at the Institute of Systems Biology (INBIOSIS), Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM). She obtained her Ph.D. in pharmaceutical sciences from Chiba University, Japan, in 2016. She earned a Bachelor’s and Master's degree in Plant Biotechnology from UKM. Her strength is in plant tissue culture studies, involving direct or indirect organogenesis, somatic embryogenesis, cell suspension culture, as well as histology and anatomy analysis. The plant of interest covers tropical plant species such as mangosteen and Garcinia spp., Nepenthes spp. (the carnivorous plant), Nephelium spp. and Citrus spp. If you are interested in collaborating with her, being part of her research group, or have any inquiries regarding the Research Plot, please email her at emelda@ukm.edu.my.

Dr. Hamizah Shahirah Hamezah's research group has a great interest in understanding the mechanisms of learning and memory, as well as interventions for the cognitive decline during aging and neurodegenerative diseases. They focus on finding possible biomarkers leading to the cognitive decline in brain aging and neurodegenerative diseases by using the state-of-art omics approaches, brain imaging, and cognitive neurosciences. They are interested in finding possible therapeutics for the treatment of neurodegenerative diseases by investigating the effect of natural compounds on transgenic animal models. If you are interested in collaborating with her, please email her at hamizahshahirah@ukm.edu.my.

ChM. Dr. Kamalrul Azlan Azizan is a research fellow at INBIOSIS, UKM. He completed his PhD in Systems Biology in 2014 at the Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM) in 2014. His research interest includes plant and microbial metabolomics as well as the application of chemometrics and multivariate for biomarkers discovery. Currently, he is working on bioprospecting allelochemicals from Wedelia trilobata using chemometrics and predictive models. ChM. Dr. Kamalrul Azlan Azizan has a strong hands-on experience with GC-MS and LC-MS systems and actively involves in the development and optimization of GC/LC methods, giving guidance through application and troubleshooting assistance. He can be contacted via email; kamalrulazlan@ukm.edu.my .

Ts. Dr. Nor Azlan currently is the Head of Centre for Bioinformatics Research, Institute of Systems Biology (INBIOSIS), Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia. He joined INBIOSIS as a research fellow in October 2015. His expertise is in bioinformatics and computational systems biology. His research focus is on the application of omics technologies to unravel new genes and pathways for the development of precision biotechnology. His current main organisms of interests are insect pests, including bagworm (Metisa plana), red palm weevil (Rhynchophorus ferrugineus) and cocoa pod borer (Conopomorpha cramerella). The long-term aim is to analyse the genome, transcriptome, proteome and metabolome of these species and use omics integration techniques to develop new methods of controlling them.  Expressions of interest for research collaboration and activity with Ts. Dr. Nor Azlan can be expressed via his email, norazlannm@ukm.edu.my.

Dr. Sarahani Harun is currently a research fellow at the Institute of Systems Biology (INBIOSIS). She graduated from the Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia where she earned a Bachelor in Bioinformatics, Master in Molecular Biology and PhD in Systems Biology. Her research interest involves computational biology that includes pathway analysis in secondary metabolites, i.e., glucosinolates and cyanogenic glycosides to unravel potential genes in the respective biosynthetic pathways. This computational pipeline can be used for new gene discovery to establish genetic resources for crop improvement. Dr. Sarahani can be contacted via email; sarahani@ukm.edu.my.
