World Wetlands Day

World Wetlands Day is observed on 2 February each year. In 2026, the theme proposed by the Ramsar Convention Secretariat is “Wetlands and Traditional Knowledge: Celebrating Cultural Heritage.” This global theme was selected to highlight the deep connection between wetlands and the cultural practices, traditions, and knowledge systems of communities around the world.

Malaysia is fortunate to possess a rich diversity of wetland ecosystems covering more than 5.19 million hectares. These ecosystems hold significant conservation value, providing economic benefits through natural resources and tourism, as well as delivering vital ecosystem services such as flood mitigation, water catchment, coastal protection, and carbon storage.
