Institute For Environment And Development (LESTARI)

The Environment and Development Institute (LESTARI) was established on 1 October 1994 as an institute that conducts research and training activities in multidisciplinary fields under the structure of Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia. Its establishment fulfills the aspirations of the university inspired during the 1992 United Nations Conference on Environment and Development (UNCED) held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, to realize the goals of sustainable development through research and capacity building.

LESTARI was established to carry out comprehensive and balanced research related to the environment and development and to assist the government in policy formation. The establishment of LESTARI also works to improve human resource capabilities through skills training and development among government officials, the private sector and the community.

Fuel Cell Institute (SELFUEL)

The establishment of Fuel Cell Institute (Institut Sel Fuel), the first research institute in Malaysia conducting research on fuel cell and hydrogen energy, was approved by the Ministry of Higher Education on the 1st of July 2006. The name of the Institute was initially Institute of Fuel Cell Technology (Institut Teknologi Sel Bahan Api). The new name Fuel Cell Institute (Institut Sel Fuel) was approved on 14th July 2007.

The founding of this institute reflected the strength of fuel cell and hydrogen energy research in the Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia. The founding of Fuel Cell Institute at the Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia also reflected the strength of research and development in renewable energy at the University especially in solar energy, hydrogen energy and fuel cell. The idea to start research in fuel cell and hydrogen energy at UKM was mooted at a meeting between the Founding Director and researchers from Nuclear Agency Malaysia (then PUSPATI) and Tenaga Nasional in 1994. Research in fuel cell and hydrogen energy at UKM started with the construction of the first proton exchange membrane fuel cell in Malaysia made from Nafion membrane donated by Dupont (M) Sdn Berhad, carbon paper electrodes and perspex plates in 1995.

Faculty of Health Sciences

The establishment of the Faculty of Allied Health Sciences (FSKB) was an idea and aspirations of some academician in 1982. The idea was brought up on the 75th Committee for Academic Planning and Development (JPPA) meeting on 16 July 1991. Officially Faculty of Allied Health Sciences was established on 1 September 1992, with 3 department Biomedical Science, Optometry and Nutrition & Dietetics. The establishment of FSKB was an initiative to fill in the country’s need for professionals in the health sciences and was the first Faculty of Allied Health Sciences in Malaysia. Faculty of Allied Health Sciences was the first faculty in the country to offer comprehensive health sciences programs. The campus is located at the heart of Kuala Lumpur City at Jalan Raja Muda Abdul Aziz together with the Faculty of Medicine (Preclinical), Faculty of Dentistry and Faculty of Pharmacy. The diversity and dynamism of life in the city are also reflected in the FSK people and the programs offers.
