Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM) demonstrates a strong commitment to regional and global cooperation in climate change adaptation and disaster resilience. Through participation in high-impact networks, technical committees and international climate programs, UKM plays a pivotal role in shaping evidence-based policies and advancing sustainable solutions for climate-related challenges. The university’s involvement in initiatives such as the ASEAN University Network (AUN) Sustainability Blueprint (Version 2.0, 2024), the Technical Committee on Climate Change (NSC Z/TC7) and global scientific platforms like the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) and World Climate Research Programme (WCRP – CORDEX-SEA) reflects its leadership in fostering transdisciplinary collaboration. By uniting academia, government, and international partners, UKM actively contributes to strengthening disaster preparedness, enhancing resilience, and supporting regional climate governance aligned with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG 13: Climate Action).

1. UKM participating ASEAN University Network (AUN) Sustainability Blueprint (Version 2.0, 2024)
Based on the ASEAN University Network (AUN) Sustainability Blueprint (Version 2.0, 2024), Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM) actively participates in co-operative planning for climate-change-related disasters, including those that may involve population displacement, in collaboration with governments and other regional partners.
As a member of the AUN Sustainability Taskforce, represented by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Tanot Unjah (UKM Global) and Assoc. Prof. Dr. Khairul Nizam Maulud (UKM Strategy Centre), UKM contributes to coordinated regional frameworks for Knowledge Exchange & Development, Academic Mobility, and SDG Consciousness that address climate action, clean energy, sustainable cities, and disaster resilience.
These initiatives include collaborative research with government agencies, interdisciplinary workshops, and mobility programmes that strengthen regional preparedness and response capacities.
2. Assoc. Prof. Dr. Zaini Sakawi as a member for the Technical Committee on Climate Change (NSC Z/TC7) (1 January 2022 to 31 December 2024)
Assoc. Prof. Dr. Zaini Sakawi plays an active role in national-level climate change governance through her appointment as a Member of the Technical Committee on Climate Change (NSC Z/TC7) from 1 January 2022 to 31 December 2024. This committee functions under the Department of Standards Malaysia, focusing on the development, review, and coordination of national standards related to climate change adaptation, mitigation, and disaster resilience.
Through her participation, Dr. Zaini contributes expert insights in environmental management, sustainable development, and risk reduction strategies, ensuring that Malaysia’s climate policies and technical standards align with global sustainability goals. Her involvement reflects Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia’s (UKM) strong commitment to cooperative planning for climate change disasters, fostering collaboration between academia, government agencies, and industry partners to enhance national preparedness and resilience against climate-related impacts.

3. Assoc. Prof. Dr. Zaini Sakawi as a member of the Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Inventory Working Group for the Waste Sector under the Department of Environment, Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment Malaysia)
Assoc. Prof. Dr. Zaini Sakawi from Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM), currently serving as the Director of the Institute of Climate Change (UKM), has been appointed as a member of the Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Inventory Working Group for the Waste Sector under the Department of Environment, Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment Malaysia. Assoc. Prof. Dr. Zaini Sakawi extensive experience in GHG inventory development, Dr. Zaini contributes valuable expertise in data analysis, waste management, and climate policy formulation. Her involvement plays a crucial role in supporting Malaysia’s efforts to enhance national GHG inventory accuracy, improve climate reporting mechanisms, and strengthen mitigation strategies in the waste sector.

4. Prof. Sr. Dr. Khairul Nizam Abdul Maulud as a alternate Member for the Technical Committee on Climate Change (NSC Z/TC7) (1 January 2022 to 31 December 2024)
Prof. Sr. Dr. Khairul Nizam Abdul Maulud serves as an Alternate Member of the Technical Committee on Climate Change (NSC Z/TC7) from 1 January 2022 to 31 December 2024. This committee, established under the Department of Standards Malaysia, focuses on formulating and harmonizing national standards related to climate change mitigation, adaptation, and disaster risk reduction.
In this role, Dr. Khairul Nizam contributes his expertise in hydrology, environmental modeling, and disaster risk management to support evidence-based decision-making and sustainable policy development. His involvement underscores Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia’s (UKM) commitment to strengthening cooperative planning for climate change disasters, bridging scientific research with practical solutions to enhance national resilience and adaptive capacity in the face of climate challenges.

5. Professor Joy Jacqueline Pereira as Co-Chair of Working Group III of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC)
Dr Joy Jacqueline Pereira is Co-Chair of Working Group III of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC). In the Sixth Assessment Report she was the Vice-Chair of Working Group II on impacts, adaptation, and vulnerabilities. Previously she has served as a Coordinating Lead Author for Chapter 24 on Asia of the IPCC Fifth Assessment Report (AR5), Lead Author for the IPCC AR5 Synthesis Report and a Review Editor for the 2012 IPCC Special Report on Managing the Risks of Extreme Events and Disasters to Advance Climate Change Adaptation (IPCC SREX).
The main activity of the IPCC is the preparation of reports assessing the state of knowledge of climate change. These include assessment reports, special reports and methodology reports. To communicate its findings and explain its work, the IPCC takes part in outreach activities organized by the IPCC or hosted by other organizations, and provides speakers to other conferences.

6. Assoc. Prof. Dr. Liew Juneng as a Technical Team Member of the World Climate Research Program (WCRP) Coordinated Regional Climate Downscaling Experiment – Southeast Asia Domain (CORDEXSEA)
Dr Liew Ju Neng is currently an Associate Professor at the Department of Earth Science and Environment, Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia. His research interests encompass various aspects of regional climate dynamics over the Southeast Asia region with a specific focus on interannual and long-term climate change time scales. Assoc. Prof. Dr. Liew Juneng serves as a Technical Team Member of the World Climate Research Programme (WCRP) under the Coordinated Regional Climate Downscaling Experiment – Southeast Asia Domain (CORDEX-SEA).
In this role, Dr. Liew contributes his expertise in climate modeling, atmospheric sciences, and regional climate projection, supporting efforts to improve the accuracy and resolution of climate data for Southeast Asia. His participation enhances the understanding of regional climate variability and extreme weather patterns, providing critical insights for climate adaptation and mitigation planning.

Through its diverse engagements at the local, national and international levels, UKM continues to position itself as a regional leader in cooperative climate action and disaster risk reduction.
