SDG 13 – CLIMATE ACTION

Take urgent action to combat climate change and its impacts

SDG 13 Indicator

13.3 – Environmental education measures

13.3.4 – Inform and Support Government

Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM) plays a pivotal role in informing, guiding and supporting government efforts in addressing climate change and disaster risks through science-based research, data-driven tools and strategic partnerships. By collaborating with national and regional agencies, UKM ensures that policy decisions and disaster management strategies are grounded in evidence, innovation, and sustainability. The university’s initiatives such as the MyIKLIM Data Curation Portal, the DesInventar Disaster Information Management System Training and expert consultancy for the Sustainable Energy Development Authority (SEDA) Malaysia, highlight its strong commitment to enhancing national preparedness, early warning systems and adaptive capacity. These programs strengthen Malaysia’s resilience against climate-related challenges while advancing regional cooperation in disaster risk reduction and low-carbon development.

1. Data Curation portal for Climate Change Research in Malaysia (MyIKLIM)

UKM has developed the OneStop Data Curation portal for Climate Change Research in Malaysia (MyIKLIM) aims to provide a comprehensive platform for climate change research data. It is a project under the UKM-YSD Chair for Sustainability under the Climate Change Mitigation  Thrust Area. This tool helps local and regional governments enhance their early warning and monitoring capabilities for climate change related disasters. By offering accessible data, customised alerts, and a user friendly interface, myIKLIM supports proactive risk management and informed decision making, reinforcing UKM role in climate resilience and adaptation.

The data are mainly provided and/or processed by researchers in a form that can be easily understood by the public. It is an interactive and informative platform where users can extract the information they need and get to know the people who are behind the dataset if they like to seek more information.

2. Basic Course on the DesInventar Disaster Information Management System by Southeast Asia Disaster Prevention Research Initiative (SEADPRI-UKM)

Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM) plays an active role in supporting the Malaysian government’s efforts to strengthen climate change disaster management through participation in initiatives such as the Basic Course on the DesInventar Disaster Information Management System. DesInventar serves as a crucial conceptual and methodological tool for systematically managing disaster-related data, enabling effective documentation, analysis, and visualization of disaster impacts.

Through this program, UKM representatives contribute to enhancing national capacity in disaster data management by utilizing DesInventar’s integrated modules to record, classify, and analyze disaster events based on parameters such as human impact, housing, infrastructure, and economic sectors. The system’s ability to generate analytical outputs in the form of tables, graphs, and thematic maps provides valuable insights for informed decision-making.

3. Chm. Dr. Mohd Sukor Su’ait is appointed as Subject Matter Experts (SMEs) by Sustainable Energy Development Authority (SEDA) Malaysia

Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM) actively participates in cooperative planning and collaborative research with government agencies to address climate change challenges, including potential disaster impacts and population displacement. Through strategic partnerships such as with the Sustainable Energy Development Authority (SEDA) Malaysia and international organizations like the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO), UKM contributes expert knowledge and technical guidance in areas related to energy resilience, sustainability, and climate adaptation. For instance, UKM researchers, through the Solar Energy Research Institute (SERI), are appointed as Subject Matter Experts (SMEs) in studies that enhance national preparedness for climate-related disruptions, particularly in the field of renewable energy and sustainable infrastructure. These collaborations reflect UKM’s commitment to supporting government-led initiatives that strengthen national capacity in mitigating and adapting to climate change impacts.

Through its continuous collaboration with government bodies and international partners, UKM has become a trusted scientific and policy advisor in Malaysia’s climate change governance landscape. By integrating multidisciplinary research, open-access data systems and expert capacity-building, UKM empowers policymakers to make informed, timely, and effective decisions in mitigating and managing climate risks. These efforts directly support the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG 13: Climate Action) and align with the nation’s aspirations under the National Climate Change Policy. UKM’s enduring commitment to supporting government action underscores its role as a national leader in environmental intelligence, sustainable energy transition and disaster resilience planning ensuring that Malaysia remains equipped to navigate the complex realities of a changing climate.
