13.3.5 – Environmental Education Collaborate with NGO
Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM) actively collaborates with non-governmental organizations (NGOs), government agencies and industry partners to advance environmental education, climate action and sustainable community engagement. These partnerships are instrumental in promoting awareness, behavioral change and hands-on participation in addressing environmental challenges. Through programs such as the Sustainability Exploration Program: From Youth to the World, the Sungai Langat River Denai Run 2024 and the KUDAH (Collecting Litter While Exercising) Program, UKM brings together youth, policymakers, NGOs and the public to cultivate environmental consciousness and resilience. Additionally, UKM’s academic experts, such as Dr. Nurul Akidah Baharuddin, play key roles in shaping national sustainability standards through collaborations with technical and civil society platforms. These initiatives reflect UKM’s leadership in building collaborative ecosystems that drive climate literacy and sustainable development in alignment with SDG 13 (Climate Action).

1. Dr. Nurul Akidah Baharuddin as Vice Chair of the Working Group 9 (WG9) – Green ICT, Environment & Climate Change under the Malaysian Technical Standards Forum Berhad (MTSFB) ( 1 July 2023 to 31 December 2025)
Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM) actively collaborates with non-governmental organizations (NGOs) and professional bodies to strengthen national efforts in climate adaptation and environmental sustainability. One notable example is the appointment of Dr. Nurul Akidah Baharuddin, Senior Lecturer at UKM, as the Vice Chair of the Working Group 9 (WG9) – Green ICT, Environment & Climate Change under the Malaysian Technical Standards Forum Berhad (MTSFB) from 1 July 2023 to 31 December 2025.Through this collaboration, UKM contributes to the development of green technology standards, climate adaptation frameworks, and environmental best practices in partnership with NGOs, industry players, and government agencies.

2. Multi-Collaboration with Sultan Mizan Antarctic Research Foundation (YPASM) NGOs, The Ministry of Natural Resources and Environmental Sustainability (NRES), in collaboration with the Institute of Climate Change (UKM) and the Environmental and Green Energy Association of Malaysia UKM (EniGMA-UKM) for Sustainability Exploration Program: From Youth to the World
UKM collaboration with multi-NGOs to organize climate change awareness program through Sustainability Exploration Program: From Youth to the World on 7 October 2024 The collaboration also involve The Ministry of Natural Resources and Environmental Sustainability (NRES), in collaboration with the Institute of Climate Change (UKM) and the Environmental and Green Energy Association of Malaysia UKM (EniGMA-UKM). The program aims to raise awareness and understanding among youth about sustainability issues, including climate change and plastic pollution and to provide a platform for interaction between young people and policymakers, allowing them to voice their opinions and suggestions on environmental policies. With the participation of 382 attendees, the program demonstrated a strong commitment among young people to addressing climate change and plastic pollution. In addition to discussions, the event also featured various environmental exhibitions from industry players and organizations and NGOs, including MAREA, RNB Beauty, Sekolah SJKT Ringlet, Climate Fresk, UKM-YSD, and others.

3. Collaboration with Friends of Rivers Malaysia (FoRM) for Sungai Langat River Denai Run 2024
UKM collaboration with NGOs to advance environmental education is demonstrated through initiatives like the Sungai Langat River Denai Run 2024 on 21 September 2024, organized in partnership with Friends of Rivers Malaysia (FoRM) for World Rivers Day. This event brought together over 1,600 participants to raise awareness about river conservation by combining physical activity with environmental action. Participants not only engaged in a 5- and 15-kilometer run but also contributed to river cleanup efforts, collecting litter along the route to promote the importance of reducing pollution and protecting natural waterways. This collaboration aligns with SDG 13 – Climate Action, reinforcing UKM commitment to educating the public on sustainable practices and fostering community participation in environmental stewardship.

4. The KUDAH Program (Collecting Litter While Exercising) organized by the Malaysian Green Technology and Climate Change Corporation (MGTC) in collaboration with ALAF-UKM and the Malaysia Airlines Academy (MAB)
Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM) actively collaborates with various government agencies, NGOs, and corporate partners to promote environmental sustainability and climate adaptation initiatives. One notable example is the KUDAH Program (Collecting Litter While Exercising) held on 21 December 2024 at Taman Tasik Cyberjaya, Sepang. Organized by the Malaysian Green Technology and Climate Change Corporation (MGTC) in collaboration with ALAF-UKM and the Malaysia Airlines Academy (MAB), the program aimed to foster environmental responsibility through community-based clean-up and recreational activities. As part of the initiative, participants also engaged in the eco-friendly practice of throwing mudballs into the lake to improve water quality and restore aquatic ecosystems demonstrating UKM’s strong partnership with NGOs and industry players in advancing climate adaptation and environmental stewardship.
