SDG 15 – LIFE ON LAND

Protect, restore and promote sustainable use of terrestrial ecosystems, sustainably manage forests, combat desertification, and halt and reverse land degradation and halt biodiversity loss

15.2 – Supporting land ecosystems through education

15.2.1 – Events about sustainable use of land

Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM) actively champions the sustainable use and conservation of land through impactful community engagement programs, research-driven initiatives and educational workshops. These efforts align with the university’s mission to preserve biodiversity, promote sustainable living, and strengthen environmental stewardship among local and indigenous communities. By organizing targeted events such as the Wildlife Conservation Intervention Program, Empowering the Semelai Community as Guardians of Nature in Tasek Bera and the Urban Farming and Sustainable Living Workshop, UKM demonstrates its leadership in advancing the principles of sustainability and responsible land management. These initiatives not only protect natural ecosystems and promote biodiversity but also empower communities with knowledge, skills, and technologies to adopt eco-friendly practices in their daily lives.

1. Wildlife Conservation Intervention Program – Empowering the Semelai Community as Guardians of Nature in Tasek Bera

On 5th October 2024 the Wildlife Conservation Intervention Program in Tasek Bera was a strategic initiative aimed at enhancing conservation awareness and empowering the Semelai Indigenous community as guardians of their natural environment. This program targets high school students, Semelai youth (aged 17 and above) total of 120 participants, and community, equipping them with essential knowledge and practical skills in ecosystem conservation through a structured learning module.

This program focuses on biodiversity conservation, sustainable ecosystem management, and community engagement. Participants will be trained in wildlife monitoring techniques, utilizing tools such as iNaturalist app that allow them to participate in scientific data collection and research projects. Additionally, the initiative also addresses the importance of reducing harmful environmental activities and encourages sustainable practices within the community.

2. Urban Farming and Sustainable Living Workshop

On 3 February – 29 June 2024, the Urban Farming and Sustainable Living Workshop organized by The UKM-YSD Sustainability Chair, Faculty of Engineering and Built Environment (FKAB), Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM), and Sime Darby Property have organized several programs for the residents of Bandar Bukit Raja (BBR), Klang. This program addresses: Community Knowledge Transfer: The three-part workshop series successfully delivered practical and accessible sustainability knowledge to Bandar Bukit Raja residents, empowering households with specific techniques for urban farming, waste segregation, and innovative recycling approaches that can be immediately implemented in their daily lives. Technological Skill Development: Participants gained valuable hands-on experience with advanced sustainability technologies including biogas production, Black Soldier Fly composting, Effective Microorganisms cultivation, and 3D printing applications. These technical skills developed helped bridge the gap between academic sustainability concepts and practical household implementation. Environmental Waste Reduction: The Sustainable Living Workshop resulted in the collection of 957.5 kilograms of recyclable materials (used cooking oil, cardboard, metal, plastic, and electronic waste), significantly reducing landfill waste and associated environmental pollutants while demonstrating the tangible impact of community-level recycling initiatives.

Through these initiatives, UKM has established itself as a national model for community-based environmental education and sustainable land management. The Wildlife Conservation Intervention Program strengthened indigenous capacity in ecosystem protection, integrating local wisdom with modern conservation science to safeguard Malaysia’s natural heritage. Meanwhile, the Urban Farming and Sustainable Living Workshop successfully fostered sustainable urban practices, reducing nearly a tonne of waste and inspiring households to adopt circular economy principles. Together, these programs embody UKM’s deep commitment to SDG 15 (Life on Land), reinforcing its vision of a campus and community that thrive in harmony with nature while cultivating a generation of environmentally conscious leaders.
