11.2.2 – Public Access to Libraries

The library building is among the facilities at Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM) that are accessible to the public. UKM’s library system comprises the Tun Seri Lanang Library, which serves as the main library on the Bangi campus. In addition to this main library, UKM also has seven other branch libraries. The table below shows the list of libraries at UKM that are open for public access.

1. Tun Sri Lanang Library

The Library Building in Bangi was first used in 1978 and was officially inaugurated by His Royal Highness Tuanku Jaafar ibni Almarhum Tuanku Abdul Rahman on 2 July 1980. The building was named Tun Seri Lanang Library in honor of a nobleman and renowned literary figure from the Malay Peninsula in the 16th century. The Tun Seri Lanang Library, PTSL UKM building is located within the Bangi campus. It is typically situated in a central location on campus, easily accessible to students and staff, including the public.

2. The Second Cluster Library

The Second Cluster Library was established in 2012 and began its services on 9 September 2013. This library manages information resources and provides services to meet the teaching, learning, and research needs of the university in the fields of engineering, architecture, technology, and information science. Located in UKM’s Second Circle area, the library shares a building with the Academic Management Centre, the Human Resource Division, and the Student Finance Division. The seven-storey building houses the library on Levels 2 to 5, covering a total area of 4,042 square metres.

3. Dr. Abdul Latiff Library

The Dr. Abdul Latiff Library is located at the UKM Kuala Lumpur Campus. This library is specifically used by students from the Faculty of Pharmacy and the Faculty of Health Sciences.

4. Law Library

The history of the Law Library began with the establishment of its branch and collection in March 1985 at the Tun Seri Lanang Library. The branch later acquired its own building and began operating as a Branch Library in June 1996. The establishment of the Law Library was aimed at meeting the needs of students and lecturers of the Faculty of Law, while also providing services to users seeking legal materials. Essentially, the Law Library houses a collection that includes statutes, law reports, serial publications, textbooks, and general law books. In addition, the Law Library also holds the Hooker Collection, academic exercises by Faculty of Law students, and an Audio-Visual Collection.

5. The Malay World and Civilization Library

The Malay World and Civilization Library (ATMA Library) was established in 1972 with the purpose of supporting the teaching, research, and administration of the Institute of the Malay World and Civilization (ATMA). The idea for its establishment originated from the Research and Documentation Program proposed by the institute’s first Director, Professor Dr. Syed Muhammad Naquib al-Attas.

Since its inception, the ATMA Library has been dedicated to developing and enriching its collection in the field of Malay world studies and civilization. Initially, the library had around 30,000 volumes, but this number has now grown to at least 85,000 volumes, comprising materials acquired both locally and internationally.

The ATMA Library houses several specialized collections, including the General Collection, Reference Collection, Special Collection, Malay Language Collection, N. A. Halim Collection, Wiramanja Collection, Saad Shukri Collection, and the Sundanese Literature Collection. The library is currently located on the 2nd and 3rd floors of the ATMA Building at UKM.

6. Hospital Canselor Tuanku Muhriz (HCTM) Library

The Hospital Chancellor Tuanku Muhriz UKM Library (PHCTM) began operations on 14 July 1997, in line with the establishment of UKM Hospital. Its main purpose is to support teaching, learning, and research activities at the Kuala Lumpur Campus (Cheras Zone), as well as to meet the information needs of medical professionals in providing patient care at HCTM. The library is located on Level 3, Chancellor Tuanku Jaafar Medical Education Complex, Hospital Canselor Tuanku Muhriz, Bandar Tun Razak, Cheras, Federal Territory of Kuala Lumpur.

PHCTM is committed to continuously enhancing its services for all library users, including academic staff, undergraduate and postgraduate students, medical professionals, and non-medical personnel. In addition, the Virtual Library, which was officially launched by the Minister of Education Malaysia on 11 February 2000, represents the library’s initiative to realize the concept of a “Library Without Borders.” This Virtual Library service has since been upgraded into a digital portal that allows online access to medical and health sciences resources, managed in a more systematic, efficient, and effective manner.

7. Hospital Tunku Ampuan Besar Tuanku Aishah Rohani Library

The Hospital Tunku Ampuan Besar Tuanku Aishah Rohani Library began operations on 1 August 2022 and is located on Level 3, Tunku Ampuan Besar Tuanku Aishah Rohani Hospital for Women and Children, Bandar Tun Razak, Cheras, Kuala Lumpur. This library was established specifically to provide information services in the field of pediatrics to hospital staff and medical students. The HPKK Library can accommodate up to 76 people at a time.

8. Pre-Clinical Library

The 10,000 square feet Preclinical Library is located on Levels 3 and 4 of the Preclinical Building, UKM Medical Centre. The library opened on 3 November 2014, but borrowing and returning services only started on 11 February 2015. The Preclinical Library was established specifically to provide information services in preclinical fields such as Anatomy, Physiology, Parasitology & Entomology, Biochemistry, Pharmacology, and Microbiology & Immunology. The Preclinical Library started with an initial budget of RM20,000, its initial collection started with 805 copies of printed materials and 16 copies of media materials, this collection was originally part of the collection belonging to the PPUKM Library of 435 copies and the Dr. Abdul Latiff Library of 370 copies, this initial collection was transferred to the Preclinical Library on 9 February 2015.

Facilities at UKM Library

There are various facilities available at the UKM Library, including reading areas, training rooms, computer rooms, exhibition spaces, and even convenience store facilities. This aligns with the library’s role as a one-stop center, in line with its motto, “The Library: A Catalyst for an Informed Society.” Among the facilities available at the UKM Library are:

1. Abdul Aziz Shaik Mydin 24 Hours Area

Located at Level 4 next to  the Reference Collection. It has a spacious reading area and is equipped with Wi-fi coverage. Kwik-print service is also provided in this area.

2. Tun Seri Lanang 24 Hours Reading Area

Located at Tun Seri Lanang Foyer and it provides a spacious reading area. Library clients can make use of this space for discussion because they are not allowed to make discussions in the reading area unless in discussion rooms. Vending machines and Wi-Fi are also provided in this area.

3. Anjung Ilmu PTSL

Anjung Ilmu PTSL can be used by all library clients. It provides two (2) discussion rooms that can accommodate eight (8) clients for every room and twelve (12) carrel desks equipped with power sources and Wi-fi.

4. Anjung Pro-Canselor Tun Ahmad Sarji

Located at Level 4 and placed in the Tun Ahmad Sarji Special Collection. This space provides a spacious reading area and is suitable for discussion.

5. Training Lab

The training lab can accommodate 35 clients at one time and is located at Level 4, User Education Unit. There is another training lab at siber@ptsl that can accommodate 40 clients at one time.

 6. Self-Check Machine

The library provides one (1) self-check machine for borrowing and returning books. This machine is located at Level 4.

 7. Reading Area

The library provides a reading area that can accommodate 1,633 clients at one time.

 8. Discussion Rooms

There are eighteen (18) discussion rooms, three (3) are available at Level 4, ten (10) are available at Level  3 and Level  five (5) are available at Level 2. These rooms are free of charge. Registration can be done online via discussion rooms booking system (drbs.ukm.my).

Library clients can access the internet  including online databases and e-mail. CD-ROM, typing and printing services are also available on this premise.

10. Sanggar Ilmu

This facility can be used for the library’s official events and can accommodate around 150 people at one time. It is located at the User Education Unit, Level 4.


11. Room For Disabled Person

It provides basic facilities for visually impaired clients and is accessible/located at Level 4. This room provides one (1) computer equipped with JAWS software.

12. Locker​

The library provides three (3) methods of locker rental for everyone.Monthly rental locked lockers with RM5.00 rental fee and RM15.00 deposit. Free of charge daily lockers and can be registered at Checkout Counter, Level  4.


13. Multipurpose / Seminar Room

There are three (3) seminar rooms that can accommodate 20, 30 and 50 clients at one time, and one (1) multipurpose room that can accommodate up to 150 clients. These facilities are provided for the library clients and are suitable for video presentations and lecture sessions. Library clients who want to use these facilities can make a reservation at the counter of Multimedia Unit, Level 2.


14. Zainal Azman Rajudin Training Room

This facility is excellent for training purposes and official events. This room is located at the Multimedia Unit, Level 2 and can accommodate 40 people at one time.

15. Anjung Qur’ani

Anjung Qurani is located on Level 4, near the Arabic and Islamic Civilization Collection. It houses Qur’an manuscripts featuring 20 types of qira’at (recitations), Braille Qur’ans, and five computer units equipped with the al-Maktabah al-Shamilah software. Other facilities include a glass board, smart TV, and an open space area. Visitors may use this space for discussions, accessing digital references, and organizing suitable activities. 

16. KK Mart Convenience Store and Apple Reseller
